Geeks of Doom Invades SDCC 2012 Preview Night
San Diego Comic-con. Gosh, I love you. The sights. The sounds. The smells. While it can definitely be a tad overwhelming if you're not prepared for it, my first night at SDCC is something I look forward to every year. As usual, my first evening on the convention floor was dominated by two distinct elements: Awesome Lego statues (pictured below), and copious amounts of body odor (feel free to imagine for yourself). Fellas... seriously. It's not that hard to control yer musk.

It's notable that this preview night seemed far, far busier then those of past years. Gone, it seems, are the days of strolling the serene, semi-packed rows of the convention center on the evening before all hell breaks loose. More and more con-goers look to be springing for the complete package and taking full advantage of the 'night before' the Con.

In any case, here are a few dozen photos that I snapped from the convention floor tonight. Enjoy. They'll be many more to come over the next few days. [...]

SDCC 2012: ‘Firefly’ Special ‘Browncoats Unite’ To Air On Science Channel This November

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 08:05 PM PDT

Firefly Cast

Just recently we found out that the cast of Joss Whedon's still-dead cult classic series, Firefly, would be reuniting at San Diego Comic-Con in celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the show. It will be the first time the show has ever had a panel at Comic-Con, though if it had the popularity it has now back when it first arrived, surely this would be one of many memorable panels. Ah, yes...life may be too damn short for ifs and maybes, but they fit perfectly into dreams.

But alas, some good news is to be had! It's being reported that a brand spankin' new Firefly TV special titled Browncoats Unite is set to air November 11th on Science Channel. [...]

SDCC 2012: Hellboy Goes To Hell This December

Hellboy in Hell banner

Well, here we are once again at San Diego Comic-Con and we've got a big announcement for fans of Mike Mignola's Hellboy!

Coming December 5, 2012 will be the next Hellboy mini-series, Hellboy in Hell. Not only is this the first new Hellboy story since 2011, but it also marks the return of Mignola to full art duties for the series. It has been a number of years since Mignola did more than the covers for a full Hellboy mini, with art being handled admirably by Duncan Fegredo since 2007's 'Darkness Calls'. It will be great to see another series from Mignola, since this is his baby and also since he is an amazing artist with a unique style that can't be duplicated [...]

‘The Crazies’ Director Breck Eisner To Take On ‘Stretch Armstrong’ Movie

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Stretch Armstrong

Another project we haven't heard from in a while is the movie based on the popular Hasbro toy, Stretch Armstrong.

The movie was once set up at Universal Pictures with The Twilight Saga star Taylor Lautner attached to star, but it has since departed Universal and found its way to Relativity Media's doorstep, who have been developing it since. [...]

CBS Films To Adapt ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’ Video Game

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Michael Fassbender surprised everybody yesterday by attaching himself to star in and produce a film based on the Assassin's Creed video game series. Though video game adaptations don't fare to well at the box office or with critics, the fact that Fassbender will be starring in and producing makes for a promising start for the Assassin's Creed film.

But this isn't the only bit of video game adaptation news that's floating around the wire. CBS Films is now getting into the act by snagging the rights to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. [...]

‘God Of War’ Movie Adaptation Grabs ‘Pacific Rim’ Writers

God of War

It's been a long, long time since we heard anything about the hit video game franchise, God of War, being turned into a movie. Once upon a time Brett Ratner was attached to the project, but it was well over three years ago now that we were told that Ratner was putting the movie on the back burner and moving on to "Trump Heist," which of course became Tower Heist.

Now the mighty Kratos has resurfaced, and it appears Universal is ready to give it another go. [...]

Eli Roth Will Direct Dracula Flick ‘Harker’ Starring Russell Crowe

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Eli Roth

Like The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Harker has found some new life after being put on the shelf. With director Neil Marshall set to captain The Last Voyage of The Demeter, Harker will be directed by none other than the master of contemporary blood and gore himself, Eli Roth.

Roth replaces Jaume Collet-Serra, who was originally set to direct the film for Warner Brothers. However, the film hit somewhat of a snag due to scheduling conflicts with Collet-Serra's projects. [...]

Mondo To Release ‘Game Of Thrones’ Posters At San Diego Comic-Con 2012

Daniel Danger - Game of Thrones Header

Mondo Posters are an impressive display of artwork and they pay homage to the subject. Although they have been drawn up for movies, Mondo has teamed up with HBO to create new posters for the hit TV series Game of Thrones.

Just like last year, Mondo will be having their very own booth at Comic-Con (for those who are mapping out and planning their weekend geek fest in San Diego it will be booth #437), and just like last year, they will be releasing past posters at an unannounced time. So of course you will have to follow @MondoNews on Twitter to find out all the exact times and posters you want to get your hands on if you didn't already the first time. [...]

The Walking Dead

As promised in that awesome first look at Michonne offin' zombies like it was checking her e-mail, the recent special episode of The Talking Dead that previewed season 3 of The Walking Dead gave us our first peek at the prison teased at the end of season 2 fans have been dying to see.

Not only do we get our first peek at the prison, but an actual tour of it. Actor Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn on the show, takes Chris Hardwick around the massive set. [...]

Dan Aykroyd Wasn’t Lying; ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Brings In Etan Cohen To Rewrite Script

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Ghostbusters

No matter how hard we try, we can't get away from any news about Ghostbusters 3. A couple of weeks back Ghostbusters star we reported that Dan Aykroyd was saying that they were bringing in a new writer for the film. Now we didn't know if this was lip service to an always nagging question or if it was true. And if it was true, would they start with a fresh story or would they use the script written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.

Now we can confirm a couple of things. First, yes, they are bringing in a new writer. [...]

Book Review: Rolling Thunder: The Art Of Dave Dorman

Rolling Thunder: The Art Of Dave Dorman

Rolling Thunder: The Art Of Dave Dorman
By Dave Dorman
IDW Publishing
Release Date: August 3, 2010
Cover Price: $49.99

Being a huge fan of Dave Dorman's artwork over the years, I jumped at the chance to take a look at and review the new art anthology book on his work and career, entitled Rolling Thunder. The large hardcover book – suitable to be a coffee table book – covers a great deal of Dorman's calling; but is also a nice overview in how many geeks and fans of so many franchises have been touched by this man's talent and genius over the years.

While I am also a Star Wars fan at heart, allow me to highlight first and foremost that this book is NOT all Star Wars stuff. Dorman has been well known to Star Wars fans (particularly those addicted to the expanded universe) for many years. There is an agreeable deep chapter dedicated to his Lucasfilm-related art, which includes prints, designs, and covers he has done for both Star Wars and Indiana Jones – some popular ones that have surfaced on the web that I am sure many are familiar with [...]

Dark Horse To Publish New ‘Star Wars’ Comic

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Star Wars by Alex Ross

I have to laugh a little at that headline, as Dark Horse publishes a new Star Wars comic what seems like fortnightly, however, the announcement made yesterday is a bit more exciting than normal. We have learned that Dark Horse is scheduled to release an all new series set in the original Star Wars trilogy, simply titled Star Wars. The book will launch in January, and will be written by Brian Wood with art by Carlos D'Anda and covers by Alex Ross.

That is pretty big news. Dark Horse publishes many Star Wars books, but most of them are Expanded Universe or feature ancillary characters. This will be the first series in a while to expand on the events of the first original film [...]

Wes Anderson Wants To See Johnny Depp, Angela Lansbury & More In His Next Film

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson films are great. They feature an ensemble cast that come together for a wonderful film with indie flair. Now with the continuing success of Moonrise Kingdom, Anderson is ready to direct his following film, which has yet to receive a title.

According to sources, Anderson is looking to cast his favorite actors Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Willem DaFoe, Jeff Goldblum, Adrian Brody, and Edward Norton. In addition to his favorite actors, he is also looking to cast Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Angela Lansbury. Quite a collection of names and if everything ends up going according to plan, then this film should be quite the looker. [...]
