Thrash Flashback: Kreator’s ‘Pleasure To Kill’

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 08:15 PM PDT

By Desmond Osorio

Kreator: Pleasure To Kill

By 1986, everyone – at least those with a penchant for fast, loud, and pounding metal - knew that Thrash music was sweeping America. The major bands of this time, those that would be known to history as The Big Four - Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, were taking over the world through touring and underground tape trading. It would be this underground tape trading movement that would bring to prominence one of Europe's most prodigious and resilient bands of our time: Kreator.

In Europe, specifically Germany, there was a growing metal scene that was being fed by overseas tape trading of American thrash bands - bands like Overkill, Exodus, Testament, and "The Big Four," along with European bands like Mercyful Fate (Denmark), Celtic Frost, and Coroner (the latter two from Switzerland). In this growing maelstrom, Germany gave birth to three bands: Destruction, Sodom, and Kreator. 1985 saw Kreator's first foray into the scene with the surprisingly catchy Endless Pain (Noise Records, 1985). Black Metal bands of today cite Endless Pain as a heavy influence on their music when employing Thrash Metal qualities into their music.*

The year 1986, however, would prove to be a different year entirely with the release of Pleasure To Kill [...]

Producer Neal Moritz Turning ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Into A Stalker Comedy

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 07:30 PM PDT

Sleeping Beauty

As expected, we're in the middle of a rush of fairy tale-inspired movies. From Snow White and the lands of Oz, to Peter Pan and Jack and the Beanstalk, they've all got projects on the way. Most of them have multiple new takes on the stories coming from various studios.

Another fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, also has new versions of the story on the the way, but producer Neal Moritz wants to take it in a completely different direction.

Moritz wants to take the Sleeping Beauty fable and turn it into a psycho stalker comedy. Why not! [...]

SDCC 2012: Cosplay Round-Up, Sunday Edition

After an exhausting but fun week covering movie and comic panels we spent our last day at San Diego Comic-Con walking the convention floor, visiting all the awesome booths, picking up a bit of swag, and speaking with a ton of comic creators, cosplayers, and fans of Geeks of Doom, and snapping as many photos as humanly possible.

Check out our extremely colorful cosplay gallery here after the jump [...]

SDCC 2012: Extremely Rare Photo Of Sand People Travelling Side-By-Side

SDCC 2012: Exclusive Photo

If you're a fan of Star Wars, then you know that Sand People always travel single file to hide their numbers. Hence, when in the first film Obi-Wan and Luke find the dead Jawas made to look like they were slaughtered by Sand People, Obi-Wan notes the tracks in the area are side-by-side, something the Sand People wouldn't do (a-ha!).

Therefore, you can imagine how excited we were this weekend when we happened upon a rare moment of two Sand People travelling side-by-side at San Diego Comic-Con!

Check out our extremely rare photo here below [...]

Anthony Mackie In Talks To Play Falcon In ‘Captain America 2′

Anthony Mackie In Talks To Play As Falcon

Some people are still talking about what they saw in Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, and of course, one of the biggest panels that is still being talked about is the Marvel Panel.

Though much of the focus was on Iron Man 3, there were some title and release announcements. Unlike Iron Man, Thor and Captain America won't be getting the generic numerical sequel, instead the two will be titled Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. [...]

Batman 101: A Beginner’s Guide To The Dark Knight

Batman 101

A lot of sites are probably putting together several lists right about now in honor of this Friday's release of The Dark Knight Rises that would name most of these as "must-reads if you're wanting to get into Batman comics," or something to that effect. But how I'd like to phrase this entry is in more of an academic sense. These books that I'm about to suggest to you are being referred to as "Read these first" because a lot of the more "higher learning" readings require a sophisticated palette that must be developed by learning the different takes on the character of Batman prior to jumping shoulders' deep into the complex and clever stories of these more advanced works.

Now, that's not to say that any of the comics listed are bad. Sure I may not like some of them as much as others, but based on my research and personal experiences, the comics listed here in Batman 101 are some of the books that have gotten most hardcore Batman fans to start loving the character in the same way I do. Keep in mind that this is a list of comic books, so you'll look elsewhere to see things like Batman '66 and Batman: The Animated Series. So, if you're ready, let's get started with something I like to call Batman 101: A Beginner's Guide To The Dark Knight [...]

Dwayne Johnson In Talks To Play DC Comic Anti-Hero Lobo

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Dwayne The Rock Johnson May Play As Lobo

Dwayne Johnson, who is practically built to fit any sort of muscular character for TV or film, has confirmed that he is in negotiations to play Lobo, a space renegade riding a star-hopping chopper.

It seems quite fitting that Johnson play as the famed DC Comic anti-hero for a couple of reasons. For one reason, he certainly fits the profile of Lobo. The other reason is that he's been rumored to play as the anti-hero for quite some time, so its quite nice to hear the news come straight from the horse's mouth. [...]

SDCC 2012: Doctor Who panel

There are arguably few fandoms quite as large or with quite the rabid following as the Whovians who follow BBC's Doctor Who. And 6500 of them turned out in force for the show's panel on Sunday at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Moderator Chris Hardwick (The Nerdist podcast) introduced the panel members, which included current showrunner Steven Moffat, executive producer Caroline Skinner, Matt Smith (the titular current Doctor #11), Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), and Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams). [...]

Original Deep Purple Keyboardist Jon Lord Dies At 71

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 12:56 PM PDT

Jon Lord

Jon Lord, the original and ear-boggling keyboardist from the British rock band Deep Purple, has died. He was 71. Lord had been suffering from pancreatic cancer and suffered a pulmonary embolism. He was surrounded by his family at the London Clinic when he passed away. Lord's official website had reported the news, with the statement, "Jon passes from Darkness to Light."

Lord was one of the unsung titans of hard rock and roll indeed, as his keyboard and organ sounds were an integral part to the amplified bluesy swagger of Deep Purple. On songs like "Lazy," "Highway Star," "Bloodsucker," "Smoke on the Water," "Woman From Tokyo," "Child in Time," and so many others, Jon Lord laid down sounds in the band that made it instantly recognizable that one was listening to Deep Purple as soon as they heard his grooves. He also incorporated many baroque and classic styles in his playing, and it stretched out into the band's sounds as well, helping make Deep Purple one of rock and roll's all time greatest and most unique bands [...]

SDCC 2012: ‘Deadpool’ Video Game Announced; First Trailer Unleashed

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Deadpool Game

It's no secret that fans have been clamoring for a good R-rated Deadpool movie for a while now, and while Marvel Studios has still not officially announced such a movie, Deadpool himself was on hand at Comic-Con to announce something else: a brand new video game based on the hit Marvel superhero.

The game, which will of course be titled Deadpool, comes from Activision and is being developed by High Moon Studios. It appears to be a 3rd-person game that will focus primarily on the Merc with the Mouth's sense of humor and affinity for violence in hopes of "scratching that itch" fans might have.

You can check out the very entertaining reveal trailer for Deadpool below now. [...]

Olly Moss The Dark Knight Rises Header

Finally, the answer to my – and by my, I mean almost everyone's – Mondo poster problem has arrived. As many of you know Mondo had their very own booth at the San Diego Comic-Con this week. For an organization to sell out one of a kind posters in a matter of minutes, they obviously deserve to have their own booth. But to those who weren't even able to purchase a couple of their posters this past weekend, Mondo would like to help you out.

On Wednesday, July 18, Mondo will be giving out Olly Moss' poster for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises to everyone. No that is not a typo, and yes there will be equal opportunity for everyone to get this poster. If you have time between 12:01 a.m. CST Wednesday July 18 until 11:59 p.m. CST, and you go on Mondo's site [...]

Karl Urban Slightly Teases Hilarious New Footage From ‘Star Trek 2′

Karl Urban

Paramount may not have had a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, but that hasn't stopped some people from pushing their films. For instance, during the Dredd panel, Karl Urban had promised that he would release some special footage from Star Trek 2 some time during the weekend.

Lo and behold, the guy wasn't lying, but he wasn't exactly telling us the truth. Check out the fun tease below [...]

SDCC 2012: With The ‘Firefly’ Reunion Panel Wrapped, How Long Until A ‘Serenity’ Sequel?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Firefly Cast

With San Diego Comic-Con's Firefly 10th anniversary reunion panel now wrapped up (watch the panel here below), we all know pretty much exactly what we did prior to it happening: Creator Joss Whedon loves this property possibly more than anything else he's done to this point in his career.

The panel itself was set up by The Science Channel, which has been airing the 13-episode series on the cable network to great success. It's even planning to do a special feature video that'll air later this year.

Towards the end of the panel, Whedon made a heartfelt speech to fans that seemed to indicate that there's more than a glimmer of hope left for the series to once again take shape on the big screen beyond the new Dark Horse comic book series coming later this year [...]
