$5 MP3 Album Deal: The Black Keys ‘Brothers’

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 09:14 PM PDT

The Black Keys Brothers

As part of Amazon's monthly $5 MP3 album deals for July 2012, The Black Keys' Brothers is on sale for only $5.

If you would like a physical copy of Brothers, the CD is available for only $11.06.

Recorded in a cinderblock building in the middle of Alabama and released in 2010, Brothers is the sixth studio album by the dynamic duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney known as The Black Keys. The group's success can be attributed to their constant touring, licensing their music to several retailers, and also because they're just that damned good. Their unique blend of rock, blues, funk, R & B, tricky beats, and fuzzy optimism (yes, I can actually hear that last one) has mass appeal. The first single released from Brothers, "Tighten Up," peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and held the number one position on the Alternative Songs chart for 10 weeks. This MP3 also comes with a digital booklet. So much awesome for only $5!

Comic Review: Captain Marvel #1

Marvel Comics: Captain Marvel #1

Captain Marvel #1
Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Dexter Soy
Cover by Dan McGuinness, Dexter Vines, and Javier Rodriguez
Marvel Comics
Release Date: July 18, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel, is a B-list Avenger who Brian Michael Bendis has actually been able to make quite interesting over the last few years in the Avengers main book. She was an Air Force pilot who was inadvertently imprinted with the DNA of a Kree warrior named Mar-Vel, also known as Captain Marvel. Along with his DNA she of course picked up all of his abilities: super-strength, flight, near invulnerability, and energy manipulation. She gets another stab at a solo book here with Captain Marvel #1.

This new comic is set up to reinvent her and to bring the Captain Marvel name to the forefront of the Marvel U again. She has a new costume and a new hairdo to go along with the name change from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel. The story is actually really simple in this first issue. Captain America sets out to convince Danvers that it's time she takes on the moniker of Captain Marvel, but she is reluctant to take on the now-dead Kree warrior's name. Captain America has a simple but elegantly delivered opinion on the difference in the hero name and the real name that sets Danvers to considering it [...]

Wait, What? Robert Rodriguez Casts Lady Gaga In ‘Machete Kills’

Lady Gaga Machete Kills Banner

OK, so it should come as no surprise that unexpected actors are being announced for the cast of the upcoming sequel, Machete Kills. Director Robert Rodriguez is known for putting together sometimes strange and always intriguing casts, and it always seems to work out quite well. The very same is expected here.

In the same way that he's announced other casting news, such as Charlie Sheen playing the President of the United States, Rodriguez took to the Twitter to announce that pop music star Lady Gaga will also have a part in the sequel. [...]

Disney In Depth: The Power Of Escapist Entertainment

Disney In Depth banner

We are told in Peter Pan that through having faith, trust, and pixie dust, we can fly. To soar. To flee from society, even if only briefly. We believe in this magic for the hope that our worries will disappear. Disney seems to possess that touch on individuals, especially "geeks" like me, who find value in a break from reality for the hope of dream-like atmospheres.

Since the devastating massacre in Aurora, Colorado, struck the United States with another tragedy, in an environment where many Americans seek diversions – at the movies – I began thinking of the importance of escapism in our society. Though we cannot avoid actuality, and boy would it be unhealthy if we denied truth, I feel we must continue to place merit in visiting worlds of whimsy. Whether they be fictional in the form of Disney films, or where the lines become blurred even further in the Disney theme parks, Americans shall always depart from reality in favor of some fantasy [...]

Producer Frank Marshall Says George Lucas Isn’t Hungry To Do ‘Indiana Jones 5′

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 04:40 PM PDT

Indiana Jones 4

May fans agree that the one great error in the Indiana Jones series was its most recent installment, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Hard to believe that a film that made so much at the box office can be panned critically and publicly, but it was, yet some are holding on to hope that a fifth Indiana Jones can put the iconic adventurer back on top.

Unfortunately, producer Frank Marshall doesn't see that happening any time soon or at all. According to him, it all ends with four [...]

Bluewater Comics: Dorian Gray #1 cover

Dorian Gray created by Oscar Wilde
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: July 25, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Bluewater Comics is an independent comic publisher who is unique in their devotion to biography and literary adaption genres. With the success of titles like Quartermain and Sherlock Holmes, this month introduces readers to Dorian Gray #1, what could be its most ambitious ongoing monthly series yet.

Oscar Wilde's wit is nearly impossible to replicate, and luckily the writers eschew attempting such a thing. Opting instead for a loosely based take on the Faustian themes and the characters in the original novel, they trade 19th century London for present day New York City. While Wilde is near and dear to my heart, I have never been a literary snob, nor do I intend to become one. Any medium that inspires people to pick up a book or enjoy said book again in a new way is a fabulous thing. Writers Darren G. Davis and Scott Davis just might have enough tenacity and decadence to make this comic fun too. That always helps, so people will actually buy it [...]

$3 MP3 Album Deal: Metallica ‘Black Album’

Metallica Black Album

This week, Metallica's Black Album is on sale in MP3 format for only $2.99. The CD is currently $13.25.

Of all Metallica albums, this one is not my favorite, but everyone in the universe loves it, thanks to hits like "Enter Sandman," and the ballads "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters," but the tracks I really dig are "Wherever I May Roam," "Through The Never," and "Of Wolf and Man." For three bucks, you cannot go wrong with getting this album (it works out to 25 cents each for 12 songs).

Comic Review: The Trials and Tribulations of Miss Tilney #1

I'll say this about The Trials and Tribulations of Miss Tilney, it wears its influences thoroughly on its sleeve. Specifically this is heavily inspired by the early volumes of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the latest slew of Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes movies, and probably just about any fun, Victorian-era, quasi-steampunkish movie or comic that's come out in the past ten or twelve years. Is it a good read? Eh, you know exactly what you're getting in this. Oh, and it moves fast. Possibly too fast, it's hard to say.

There doesn't appear to be a straightforward pitch for the series' premise, but to sum up the first issue: the titular character, a newspaper columnist longing to do real journalism, gets the opportunity to do so. Her editor is looking for someone to investigate The Harwood Murders. Lord Beowolf Harwood, a renowned hunter, was at a party in his honor when he suddenly shot up the guests. After a very Silence of The Lambs-esque build-up, Miss Tilney gets an interview with him only to discover that he's no Hannibal Lecter. Locked up with his accomplice, Dr. Plum, he manages to convince her of his innocence and suggests that there's a more sinister plot afoot. Escape plans are quickly enacted and before we know it, the three are secluded in Harwoods Manner where things quickly go violent and grim [...]

Yes, the trailer that almost very film enthusiast has have been waiting to see has finally made its debut online, and it is absolutely breathtaking. 5 Batman Villains Who Deserved The Christopher Nolan Treatment

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Five Batman Villains

When Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson) and Dr. Jonathan Crane (The Scarecrow, played by Cillian Murphy) appeared as villains in Christopher Nolan's 2005 film, Batman Begins, it was obvious that this Dark Knight series would be a drastic departure from the previous Batman movies by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher.

Sadly, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy has come to an end, and after a heartfelt farewell letter it's obvious he won't be revisiting Gotham City any time soon. There's still hope, however, that instead of rebooting the Batman franchise (and minimizing Nolan's masterful trilogy), Warner Bros. will find a way to continue the story and put a new twist on some classic villains.

Below are 5 Batman Villains Who Deserved The Christopher Nolan Treatment - impractical, fantastical, altogether colorful bad guys who could be effectively re-worked as gritty, reality-based foes for the Dark Knight [...]

Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Developing Movie Based On Animated Short ‘Bad Toys II’

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 08:07 AM PDT

Bad Toys II

That headline means exactly what your brain most likely first thought it meant.

Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions are currently developing a movie based on the French animated/live-action/comic book panel hybrid short from Daniel Brunet and Nicolas Douste, titled Bad Toys II, for Columbia Pictures.

The short is basically a man playing with his old toys, but presented in the style of a Michael Bay movie (just as most of us imagined it as kids), drawing much inspiration from the highway car chase in Bays Bad Boys II. [...]
