Music Review: Slash ‘Apocalyptic Love’ Posted: 29 Jul 2012 02:30 PM PDT Apocalyptic Love Slash feat. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators CD | Deluxe CD | MP3 | Vinyl* Label: Dik Hayd Release Date: May 22, 2012 The musicians that made up one of America's greatest rock bands of all time, Guns N' Roses, have had problems finding their way after that band fell apart. Each of them has tried solo acts with varying degrees of success. Axl Rose, maintaining ownership of the band's name, has even attempted a new album and tour with new musicians. The album that Rose crafted took many years to complete and it ended up being mediocre. Slash's first attempt at creating a new band with some of his GN'R band mates was Slash's Snakepit. The music featured Slash's razor-sharp riffs, but it lacked the heart of GN'R at their best. Slash's second attempt at building something with his GN'R buddies was a new band that featured Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots on vocals. While the lead singer of an alternative rock band doesn't seem to make sense fronting a classic hard rock band, it really worked for the debut album. The music was truly modernized hard rock. After that fantastic release the follow up, with a different singer, was weak [...] |

Book Review: 172 Hours on the Moon Posted: 29 Jul 2012 01:30 PM PDT 172 Hours on the Moon By Johan Harstad Little, Brown and Company Hardcover | Kindle Released April 17, 2012 Ah finally a creeptastic sci-fi space adventure! Johan Harstad's anxiety provoking 172 Minutes on the Moon will make you rethink NASA and all those mysterious moon missions. Did they really find only moon rocks and dusty desolation, or did they find something so incomprehensibly sinister up there that Buzz Aldrin had to chuck his moon boots at it just before closing the lunar module and hightailing it back to earth? NASA needs money. In order to get that money, they concoct a harebrained scheme to hold a worldwide lottery to select three lucky teenagers to go on the next moon mission. They figure if they hype it right, going to the moon will be bigger and better than going to Disneyland and, thus, be considered worthy of an ample share of government funds. Millions of teens around the world apply for a coveted spot, one of whom really didn't want to go, another who couldn't care less about the mission, and one who signed up with a certain reluctant enthusiasm. What these three winners have in common is that they all wanted to get away from home for a while. Some had plans never to return to their countries of origin. Ironically, none of them were the slightest bit Geek [...] |

Comic Review: Ghostbusters #11 Posted: 29 Jul 2012 12:30 PM PDT Ghostbusters #11 Written by Erik Burnham Art by Dan Schoening Colors by Luis Antonio Delgado Extra Story by Tristan Jones Letters by Neil Uyetake Edits by Tom Waltz Covers by Dan Schoening, Tristan Jones & Mike Henderson IDW Publishing Release Date: July 25, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 In Ghostbusters #11, the boys continue there cross country trek, this time stopping in Roswell, New Mexico. Hmmmmmm....strange things going on in Roswell? Who would've guessed that? Erik Burnham hasn't missed a beat in ten issues, and doesn't miss one now. The characers on all dead-on, and it's nice to see the boys in gray as fish out of water. These last couple issues have been killer with the guys going literally all over the country. While hometown heroes back in New York City, they don't really get the respect they deserve around the rest of the country, which takes them by surprise, but they all have different, and funny, ways of dealing with it. This issue is particularly interesting as they come face to face with an FBI team that's investigating aliens, and the old "they're ghosts!" "NO! They're aliens" debate comes into play. All in all, another excellent issue filled with classic Ghostbuster humor and heart [...] |

Comic Review: The Lone Ranger: Snake of Iron #1 Posted: 29 Jul 2012 11:00 AM PDT The Lone Ranger: Snake of Iron #1 Written by Chuck Dixon Art by Esteve Polls Colors by Marcelo Pinto Letters by Simon Bowland Cover by Dennis Calero Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: July 11, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 As if the regular title wasn't enough, Dynamite this month gives us The Lone Ranger: Snake of Iron #1, the start of a miniseries that is a fantastic Lone Ranger adventure that spans the almost the whole country and is full of mystery, action, and good old fashioned good guys vs bad guys. Sort of. Acclaimed writer Chuck Dixon takes on The Lone Ranger!!! This is an excellent first issue. It really reminds me of a classic episode of the TV series, but with a wider scope to it. For one, The Lone Ranger and Tonto are separated, and we follow each character on their adventures, which are VERY different from each other. While Tonto is stuck in a more "civilized" environment than he's used to, the Ranger is set off tracking the mythical "Spirit Horse" that has the Kaigwa Indian tribe VERY upset. While on his mission, the Ranger runs across a very cute, comic foil for him and he's forced to try and keep an eye on her while trying to keep peace with the Indian tribe. Tonto, unknown to him, is about to set off on the same mission, but he's halfway across the country [...] |

Happy Birthday To Rush Frontman Geddy Lee Posted: 29 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT Happy Birthday today to one of rock and roll's greatest bass players of all time, whose signature sound and sonic hyperbole on his instrument have been a key ingredient to the success and style of the Canadian power trio Rush for over 40 years now, one Geddy Lee. Lee, born Gary Lee Weinrib in 1953, was, along with guitarist Alex Lifeson, one of the founding members of Rush. He got his first name due to his mother's pronunciation of the name Gary in her thick accent, which came out aurally as "Geddy." Employing drummer Neil Peart in 1974 after their original drummer John Rutsey had left the band, that musical triumvirate has remained intact ever since, releasing over 20 records (studio and live recordings), of some of the most adventurous, progressively hyper arranged and tonally muscular music ever recorded. Each member tackles its respective instrument with stratosphere aplomb and the result makes Rush one of the all-time signature rock and roll bands [...] |
