$5 MP3 Album Deal: The Very Best Of Otis Redding

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 04:20 AM PDT

Otis Redding

The Very Best Of Otis Redding, a collection showcasing the late, great soul singer, whose heartfelt and wrenching vocalizing helped create some of the most memorable and emotional music of all time, is on sale in MP3 format for only $5.00 right now on Amazon.

Redding, who in his short life and career became a pioneer for the Atlantic/Stax brass-laden R&B sounds that were coming out of places like Memphis, is well represented on this release. You'd be hard pressed to find another "best of" album that has such memorable and amazing hits, B sides and non-hits. "These Arms of Mine," "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Shake," "That's How Strong My Love Is", "Respect" (which Redding had written and became a huge hit later for Aretha Franklin), a great cover of The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," and the standards "Try A Little Tenderness" and his posthumous number one smash, released shortly after he tragically died in a plane crash in December 1967, "Dock of the Bay." The man remains an incredible force in musical history, one that will never be forgotten and one that gets finer and finer with age, much like this collection.

$5 MP3 Album Deal: Neil Young and Crazy Horse ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere’

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 09:36 PM PDT

Neil Young

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, the record that arguably brought Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse onto the level he is best known for today, grungy countrified Jimi Hendrixian-style riffing mixed with heartfelt arrangements and lyrics and backed with Young's signature fragile yet ultra assured vocal style, is on sale for only $5.00 in MP3 format right now on Amazon.

The record, released in 1969 and sandwiched in between Young's stint in Buffalo Springfield and right before he joined Crosby, Stills, and Nash, coupled with a solo career which continues to this day, still has all the sonic power and muscle as when it was first released. Opening with the push-pull guitar riff on the now classic track "Cinnamon Girl," the record instantly charts its sounds, power, and style. The rest of the album is equally as relentless and memorable, "Down by the River," "The Losing End," the title track, and especially the album's closer, "Cowgirl in the Sand," are punctuated by a loose, stripped-down guitar attack mixed with a sort of dry gulch arrangement and sparseness which actually adds to the Young sound in many ways. This release remains an absolute stunner of a record, which set the stage for Young's breakthrough success just a few years later with Harvest.

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Director Jon M. Chu In Talks For New He-Man Movie ‘Masters Of The Universe’

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Masters of the Universe

We've heard more rumors and whispers of a new He-Man movie being made than most folks can keep track of over the years. Once upon a time we had what sounded like the best possible direction the movie could be going in with word of an epic fantasy titled Grayskull: Masters of the Universe, which would be presented along the same lines as Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy with a little Batman Begins and The Matrix thrown in for good measure.

Much time has passed since then with new directors and writers and studios coming and going. But now Sony Pictures is ready to give it another go, and they've found the director they want to make it happen. [...]

$5 MP3 Album Deal: Eric Clapton’s ‘Unplugged’

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 06:15 PM PDT

Unplugged by Eric Clapton

If you're a fan of rock or blues, you already know the name Eric Clapton. For those who don't, he is one of the most prolific musicians from the Classic Rock era, not to mention one of the best guitarists of any era. His work has spanned several genres, but his blues output across each decade is some of the finest music you will ever have the joy of hearing. To get a fantastic sampling of what Clapton has to offer, you should check out his Unplugged record over at Amazon as a part of their monthly $5 MP3 Album Sale.

On this acoustic album, Clapton tears it up live over fourteen tracks that include hits from his then-three decade career, and the versions of "Tears in Heaven" and "Layla" became hits as big as their studio-recorded counterparts. Clapton's love of older blues standards is on display in his amazing performances of "Before You Accuse Me," "Malted Milk," and "Hey Hey," as well as a spirited rendition of Muddy Waters' "Rollin' and Tumblin'".

Whether you're a longtime lover of or new to Clapton's work, Unplugged is a must-add to your collection. In a show of solidarity and strength, some of the survivors of the Aurora shooting, which left 12 people dead and 58 wounded, wore Batman shirts this morning to the court hearing for suspect James Holmes. The survivors, along with the families and friends of the victims, were at the courthouse today to see Holmes charged with 142 counts, including 24 counts of first-degree murder, in connection with the shooting, which took place on July 20th during a midnight screening of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

"He attacked us out of cowardice but we will attack back in strength," said Don Lader, 32, who escaped along with his wife with minor injuries from the Century 16 multiplex movie theater after Holmes allegedly opened fire upon attendees of the midnight screening for the new Batman film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lader, who wore a Dark Knight Rises shirt to the court house with the words "A Fire Will Rise" on it, has gone back to see the film twice since the attack. Lader reportedly had told the media after the shooting that he "would not allow fear to govern his actions." [...]

Marvel Expected To Release Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ In 2014

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 03:23 PM PDT

Ant-Man

Marvel Studios generally releases up to two films every year, but 2014 could be the year that we see three. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy are both slated to be released that year, and then came the report that we could also see Ant-Man opening in 2014 has well.

During the Marvel Panel at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, Wright came out to present the test footage he shot earlier this year. The panel and test footage proved that Marvel wasn't stalling on the development for Ant-Man, and they were hard at work to get the film into production as soon as possible. Though the test footage was relatively rough, it did show that Ant-Man would be no ordinary action hero [...]

Depeche Mode Violator

As part of Amazon's monthly $5 MP3 album deals for July 2012, Depeche Mode's Violator is on sale for only $5.

Even though Depeche Mode has been around since 1980, their music still sounds fresh and alive with new wave electro-pop pleasure (and just the right amount of tortured soul). Originally released in 1990, Violator was digitally remastered and re-released in 2006. Included on this album are such well-worn favorites as "Personal Jesus," "Enjoy the Silence," and "Policy of Truth."

Peter Jackson Confirms ‘The Hobbit’ Will Be A Trilogy

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 11:20 AM PDT

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Bilbo

Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. had mulled over the idea of turning The Hobbit into a trilogy since Comic-Con weekend earlier this month. The adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic novel was to be released as two films, but Jackson stated that there was a strong desire by the filmmakers to tell more of the story.

Well New Line, MGM, and Warner Bros. must like what they have been seeing, because they have given the green light for Jackson to move forward with making The Hobbit into three films, making this his second Tolkien trilogy (his first being the famed, award-winning Lord Of The Rings trilogy). Jackson confirmed the news on his official Facebook page [...]

James Cameron Confirms ‘Avatar 2′ Won’t Be Released Until 2015 The Earliest

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 10:17 AM PDT

James Cameron talks about Avatar sequels

Though James Cameron has stated that he will be working on nothing but Avatar sequels, there hasn't been much development since the announcement was made. Fox had planned to release Avatar 2 in 2014, but producer John Landau stated that in addition to presenting the film using cutting edge 3D technology, they also wanted to shoot the film at 60 frames per second. An average film shoots at 24 FPS and Peter Jackson doubled the rate with The Hobbit films, which were shot at 48 FPS.

Now in an interview with the New York Times, Cameron confirmed that Avatar 2 would not be ready until at 2015 or later. This puts the film's release a year past the one Fox had projected [...]

Skull-Face Island: Episode 01: The Batman

Skull-Face Island Movie Podcast presented by Geeks Of Doom Episode 01: The Batman

In the year 1991, US Flight 1313 soared unknowing to its death. As the vessel sank into the ocean's depths, three boys washed ashore on Skull-Face Island...

Located at approximately 12°S 78°E — somewhere off the coast of Sumatra — is Skull-Face Island. This sub-continental land mass was believed to be nothing more than a myth, until a scientific expedition, funded by the Department of Heuristics and Research on Material Applications, discovered the tropical isle in the late '70s.

The goal of the expedition was to establish a communications station on a remote island. Using sonar and satellite technologies, this communications array would allow the scientists to communicate with their base of operations located another remote, uncharted island. To their surprise, Skull-Face Island was filled to the brim with superstitious natives, prehistoric creatures, monstrous primates and way-too-big insects. I'm talking millipedes the size of IKEA couches, motherfucker - you don't mess with that [...]

Happy 65th Birthday Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 07:06 AM PDT

Arnold Schwarzenegger tank watch

Big Birthday greetings go out today to the Terminator, the Governator, the man who would be back, who became one of the biggest action stars in cinema history, a former bodybuilder, whose Austrian accent, eclectic charm and oversized brawn coupled with a sly wink of a wit in his films and somewhat often mispronounced last name has made him a superstar in every sense of the word, the one and only, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Born in a small village in Austria on July 30, 1947, and enduring a rather rough childhood at the hands of his abusive father, Schwarzenegger started lifting weights as a teenager, parlaying it into a successful career as he wound up winning five Mr. Universe titles and seven Mr. Olympia wins. His training for the 1975 edition of that contest was immortalized on film in the documentary Pumping Iron which was released two years later, in 1977. Afterwards, he focused his attention to acting - he had done a few films here and there during the early 1970s and even auditioned for the role for the television version of The Incredible Hulk, which went to his rival in the Pumping Iron film, Lou Ferrigno. He then made a few appearances in mostly low budget, off the radar films, nothing major, pretty much playing intimidating heavies with not much to say [...]
