Netflix Review: Doctor Who – The Waters Of Mars

Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars

Netflix Streaming
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Graeme Harper
Produced by Russell T. Davies
Starring David Tennant, Lindsay Duncan, Peter O'Brien, Aleksander Mikic
BBC Worldwide
Originally Broadcast: November 15, 2009

With the landing of Curiosity on Mars by NASA during this previous week, and the impending premiere of the next Doctor Who series this month, today's Netflix Review was an easy choice. The Waters Of Mars is a crowning achievement from the Russell T. Davies and David Tennant epoch of Doctor Who, exploring a darker side of the Time Lord from Gallifrey previously unexplored, while he pops by the Red Planet for a bit a visit.

Set in 2059, the Doctor materializes his TARDIS on Mars with the goal of a bit of wandering and a bit of fun. Companionless since Donna Noble departed, he is essentially running from both responsibility and prophecy, the Doctor comes across the first Earth colony on the Red Planet, named Bowie Base One. Knowing that the base is destined for disaster, the Doctor finds himself in a crucial tipping point – should he interfere with a fixed point in time? [...]

‘Galaxy Quest’ Director Dean Parisot Signs On To Helm ‘Bill & Ted 3′

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Dean Parisot To Direct Bill And Ted 3

Two years ago was the last time any of us heard anything about the long-gestating second sequel to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. You might say they've had better progress pushing the moving forward than Ghostbusters 3, considering that it's much easier to bring back two people as opposed to four and that two of its key players, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter who played two hilarious hapless characters who travel back and through through time via phone booth, are both on board to reprise their roles. Now Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot has signed on to helm the third Bill & Ted.

Vulture was the first to report the news of Parisot's hiring. MGM, who owns the right to the film, are apparently pleased with the draft that Bill & Ted creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson came up with. But since it is MGM, the project might take a little longer to get off the ground than one would hope. Still MGM managed to get out of the financial hole as they have been able to release the Cabin in the Woods earlier this year and will Red Dawn this Fall, so don't count out Bill & Ted 3 out of the picture just quite yet [...]

Edgar Wright Comedy ‘The World’s End’ Adds Rosamund Pike

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Rosamund Pike

Edgar Wright is expected to begin shooting Ant-Man as soon as he completes his work filming The World's End, the final installment in his Blood and Ice Cream trilogy. The apocalyptic film will reunite Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost for another comedic take on a genre film. Now with production expected to begin next month, The World's End is adding a few more pieces. This time the Daily Mail reports that Rosamund Pike will be joining the cast of the film.

It's not entirely known who Pike will play, although the teaser poster that was released earlier this year may reveal she could be a bartender or be a part of the group (presumably led by Pegg and Frost's characters) that go bar hopping before the world comes to a cataclysmic end. The synopsis below also may hint at who she could play. But until we get confirmation, all we could do is speculate [...]

$5 MP3 Album Deal: ‘Bad Company’

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Bad Company

The self-titled debut album by Bad Company is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.

Born mostly from the remnants of the British hard rock band Free, which its lead singer, bluesy belter Paul Rodgers was a part of, Bad Company had steady success through the 1970s with its basic yet heavy approach to rock and roll. Originally releasing records on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label, the band had a knack for churning out rockers and ballads that have lasted to this day. "Can't Get Enough," the dark and moody title track, the restless "Movin' On," the urgent "Ready For Love," and others on this debut release churn with a rock swagger without all the pomp and bombast of said Zeppelin.

Check Out The First Image Of Russell Crowe From Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Noah’

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 02:22 PM PDT

Noah Header

The story of Noah is among one of the greatest Biblical stories ever told, and Darren Aronofsky will finally be able to bring his vision of a man who saved his family and many animals from an epic flood to the big screen after years of gestating. Of course his vision will have a slight twist, but it will also keep the spirit of the story. So after a couple of casting rumors and set photo reveals from the director himself, we are getting our first look at Russell Crowe as the titular hero. Check it out below.

Crowe looks rugged and his clothing is tattered, but other than that, there isn't too much to describe about the image. But we've seen giant set photos of the ark in the past, which suggest that this is going to be one of Aronofsky's biggest films. The director occasionally posts photos on his twitter account to update his fans on the progress of the film [...]

Skull-Face Island: Episode 03: Total Recall & The Bourne Legacy

Skull-Face Island Movie Podcast presented by Geeks Of Doom
Episode 03: Total Recall / Bourne Legacy

Hello! It's Adam Frazier aka FamousMonster and welcome to Skull-Face Island! Last week we participated in the 20th Annual Skull-Face Island Olympic Games, where Team USA took the Gold in Ribbon Dancing, Pterodactyl Hang Gliding, and Freestyle Napping. As expected, the natives dominated in Interpretive Animal Sacrifice, Coconut Bowling, and of course, the 100m Velociraptor Dash.

Needless to say, David Allen, Tim Grant, and myself are exhausted. We've been replenishing our precious bodily fluids with copious amounts of fruit smoothies and frozen daiquiris thanks to Tim's capacity for building state-of-the-art blending apparatuses out of scrap metal and tree bark.

If you missed our previous transmissions, let me explain how this works. In the year 1991, US Flight 1313 experienced a mysterious, magnetic anomaly somewhere over the South Pacific. Engines failed, pilots cursed and prayed to their Gods, and three boys (that's us!) washed ashore on Skull-Face Island, which of course is an ISLAND in the SHAPE of a SKULL! How cool is that!? [...]

Special Effects Master Carlo Rambaldi, Creator Of E.T., Dead At 86

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 12:42 PM PDT

Carlo Rambaldi

Carlo Rambaldi, the three-time Academy Award-winning Italian-born visual effects artist responsible for creating the alien E.T. in Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, died today in Lamezia Terme, Italy after a long illness, according to the Washington Post. He was 86 years old.

Born on September 15, 1925 in Vigarano Mainarda, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Rambaldi got his start in the Italian film industry providing visual effects for films such as Bloody Pit of Horror and Mario Bava's highly influential sci-fi chiller Planet of the Vampires. He would later reunite with Bava to execute the gory murder sequences for one of the acclaimed filmmaker's finest films, Twitch of the Death Nerve (a.k.a. A Bay of Blood). In 1971, Rambaldi's mutilated dog effects for Lucio Fulci's psychedelic giallo Lizard in a Woman's Skin were deemed so realistic that the director was prosecuted in Italian court on charges of animal cruelty. Only after Rambaldi presented the fake dog effects in court was Fulci exonerated [...]

Watch This Trailer For Dan Bradley’s Remake Of ‘Red Dawn’

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 12:02 PM PDT

Chris Hemsworth in Red Dawn

Since the Red Dawn remake was finished two years ago, Josh Hutcherson became a participant of The Hunger Games, Chris Hemsworth became a humbled hammer-wielding demi-god and a member of The Avengers, Jeffery Dean Morgan became a hotel owner mixed up in mob affairs, and Adraianne Palicki became a member of G.I. Joe. But before all of that, they were Wolverines and after seeing a couple of promotional images, we now have our first trailer for Red Dawn. And you know what, it doesn't look half bad, even if the film had been shelved for two years. Check it out below.

Like the first Red Dawn film, this remake centers on a group of youthful citizens and a capable soldier as they fight to regain control of their small town from the hands of international enemies, in this case, it's the North Koreans. As you can see, they will be severely out numbered, out classed, and out gunned, but that won't stop them. Based on the trailer alone, the new Red Dawn looks like one of those fun popcorn action flicks [...]

Blizzard Entertainment Reveals ‘World of Warcraft’ Security Breach

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
Yesterday Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment, announced a security breach via a 'Blue Post' on Blizzard's official web site citing "an unauthorized and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard." In the wake of the shaky Diablo III launch, and with the release of Mists of Pandaria looming so close upon the horizon, Blizzard really doesn't need any more on their plate but they can't seem to catch a break.

Morhaime goes on to state that "for players on North American servers, the answer to the personal security question, and information relating to Mobile and Dial-In Authenticators were also accessed. Based on what we currently know, this information alone is NOT enough for anyone to gain access to Battle.net accounts." It should be noted at this time Blizzard doesn't believe that any credit card information was accessed, and what was taken was simply e-mail addresses and SRP-encoded (Secure Remote Password protocol) versions of user passwords. Movie Review: The Campaign

The Campaign Poster

The Campaign
Directed by Jay Roach
Written by Chris Henchy, Shawn Harwell
Starring Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott
Warner Bros. Pictures
Rated R | 85 Minutes
Release Date: August 10, 2012

Written by Eastbound & Down's Shawn Harwell and Chris Henchy (The Other Guys), The Campaign is a delightful concoction of political commentary and buffoonish man-child shenanigans. The film, which follows two rival politicians who are trying to win an election, is the perfect project for director Jay Roach.

Roach, whose comedic film credits include Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and Meet the Parents, has also directed HBO political dramas like Recount, which earned him two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Made for Television Movie, and Game Change about the 2008 McCain/Palin campaign, one of the most watched films in HBO history.

In The Campaign, long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) is caught with his pants down before an upcoming election, entangled in an embarrassing, John Edwards-esque sex scandal that could potentially ruin his career. Cue a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs (John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd) who plot to manipulate a dummy candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district so they can building sweatshops and 'insource' low-wage Chinese workers to double profits [...]
