$4 MP3 Album Deal: John Coltrane ‘The Ultimate Blue Train’

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 05:20 AM PDT

John Coltrane Blue Train Cover

Another heavyweight release from the golden era of jazz, Blue Train by saxophone titan John Coltrane, is on sale in MP3 format right now on Amazon for only a mindboggling $3.99! For jazz aficionados, this is the deal of the year, if not the decade.

Blue Train (known here as The Ultimate Blue Train because it spawns some bonus tracks of alternate takes) was originally released in 1957 and while it arguably may not stand as Coltrane's best album, it is still a watershed musical release for the tenor player.

From its iconic cover, inspired by Coltrane's affection for Pablo Picasso's storied artistic "blue period" of his paintings, to the classic title track - which starts off in stutter steps of brass sounds and chugs along to bluesy hard bop - and tracks like "Moment's Notice," which has urgency and unabashed classy musical taste via the talents of Coltrane leading the way, and the wonderful rhythm section of Paul Chambers on stand up bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, the upbeat "Locomotion" and in fact all the rest of the tracks, Blue Train is essential. The record also achieved the rare feat of being certified Gold by the RIAA, as most jazz records never sell into the hundreds of thousands. The fact that this album did says a lot about Coltrane's desire to standout in an ocean of his amazing jazz peers at the time and of all time. Blue Train remains one of America's most memorable and important musical releases for all eternity.

Grab the album while it's on sale through the end of the day. Also, browse all 1,000 albums on sale this month for only $5 each, as well as several albums on sale this week for only $2.99 each [...]

John Goodman Will Have A Villainous Cameo In ‘The Hangover Part III’

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 08:27 PM PDT

John Goodman

John Goodman is a jack of all trades kind of actor. He can play a dad, a hero, a villain, a drunk, almost anything actually. Now the actor has signed on for a small cameo role in The Hangover Part III. Cameos have become a staple in The Hangover franchise. Mike Tyson and Nick Cassavetes both had cameos in the respective Hangover films. Director Todd Phillips even tried to reel in Mel Gibson and Liam Neeson for a couple of cameo roles, to no avail though.

Variety reports that Goodman will have a "small role as an antagonist." If anything, Goodman's screen time will be small, but he's sure to have a comedic impact in the film [...]

Henry Selick

After completing his work on Coraline, stop-motion director Henry Selick headed over to Walt Disney Studios to work on a new mysterious stop-motion animated feature. That was back in 2010. Now Variety reports that the studio pulled the plug on the project and that the film could find new life at another studio.

Selick gave Disney The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, two solid stop-motion animated features. But as to why this particular project was halted, sources told the trade that the film was at "a creative and scheduling standpoint" and that it "wasn't where it needed to be to meet its planned release date." Production for the film started last summer [...]

Watch These Clips From The Beautifully Restored ‘Jaws’ Blu-ray Edition

Steven Spielberg's epic adventure Jaws was released this week for the first time on Blu-ray and I have to say, it's awesome. If the over four hours of bonus features, including new documentaries and previously released extras (listed here below), on this Blu-ray release don't grab you, then the frame by frame digital restoration restoration of the film definitely will, as it's stunning. You can see the before-and-after restoration comparison stills here below.

Below are a few clips from the Blu-ray Edition of scenes from the film, and even watching them on the small screen will show you how amazing the restoration looks. There's also a behind-the-scenes video of composer John Williams and director Steven Spielberg talking about the film's memorable theme music, a clip from the Blu-ray documentary feature The Shark is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of JAWS.

The 10 Best Films Of 2012 So Far…

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

The 10 best films of 2012 so far...

Hello Geeks, FamousMonster here. So, how many movies have you seen this year? I've spent the past couple of hours cataloging every film I've seen released in 2012, and the magic number is 60. That's 60 movies in seven months, which means out of the 228 days of the year so far - I've spent five entire days watching new movies.

With four and a half months left in 2012, I think it might be a good time to figure out what my favorite movies of the year are so far. Soon we'll be transitioning from summer's popcorn blockbusters to fall's dramatic, heavy-hitting films vying for Oscars and Golden Globes. There's been a lot of fantastic films this year, some of which were huge successes with wide releases and record-breaking box office returns, others were limited-release independent films that deserve your attention.

It's my hope that this list of ten films balances obvious, geek-approved genre flicks with new, interesting titles that you'll seek out and enjoy. Of course, there are still plenty of highly-anticipated films on the way - The Master, Lincoln, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Django Unchained - but until then, this list should keep you busy. OK, enough talking, let's get on with the show. Without further adieu, here's my list of the 10 best films of 2012 so far [...]
