Netflix Review: Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark
Netflix Streaming
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Troy Nixey
Starring Bailee Madison, Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Jack Thompson, Alan Dale, Julia Blake, Garry McDonald
FilmDistrict
Originally Released: August 26, 2011

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is a fun horror flick that appropriates heavily from classic horror, fairy tales, and some of producer Guillermo del Toro's own films as well. While del Toro handles production and writing duties, direction is capably handled by Troy Nixey in his debut. Connected with some great performances, excellent monster effects, and some outstanding set design and lighting effects, this is a movie well worth checking out.

Effectively a remake of the 1973 TV movie of the same name, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark explores the line that marks the division between fairy tales and horror stories. The story follows young girl Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison) as she relocates to live with her father, dealing with the difficulty of being a small child in a broken family [...]

‘Borderlands 2′ Collector Editions Offer Major Swag

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 04:06 PM PDT

Borderlands 2

After reading my recent Borderlands 2 article (Gearing Up For Borderlands 2 September Launch), I got that warm and fuzzy feeling that comes when I read one of my published articles, but then I realized that in my furor I neglected to go over some of the key points of the upcoming launch. I aim to remedy some of that with this article.

First and foremost Take 2 Interactive is offering up two special editions at the game's launch. For the price of $99.99, you get the Deluxe Vault Hunter's Collector's Edition which in addition to the game includes a Marcus Kincaid bobble-head, an art book, stickers, a digital comic, and a yet-to-be-announced DLC for the game. This constitutes some mighty fine swag [...]

Jerry Nelson, Muppet Puppeteer, Dies At 78

Jerry Nelson

Jerry Nelson, famed puppeteer who delighted generations of tykes and young people for decades, and was best known for his work with Jim Henson's Muppets, died yesterday from complications of various types of cancers he had been stricken with. He was 78.

Nelson may well be best remembered by the children of the baby boomers for his portrayal of the memorable Muppet characters on Sesame Street. A short list of some of them include the sleuth Sherlock Hemlock, the alchemic magical Amazing Mumford, the gentle giant Herry Monster, and above all, one of the A-list Muppets on the show, the numerologistic Count Von Count, who in essence, helped teach scores of children how to count from one to ten during his tenure on the program. That character had debuted 40 years ago on the show and quickly became a fan favorite [...]

Hugh Laurie No Longer The Villain In ‘Robocop’, May Be Replaced By Clive Owen

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 01:38 PM PDT

Hugh Laurie

After House ended its series run earlier this year, Hugh Laurie was to make the jump to films starting off with a role as the villain in Jose Padilha's Robocop. Now reports are coming in confirming that he won't be in the film after all. Jeff Sneider of Variety reports that Laurie never had his deal finalized, even though he was in talks to star.

Sneider wrote: "HUGH LAURIE definitely out of ROBOCOP reboot, not that he was ever 'in.'"

As to who his replacement could be, Deadline says that Clive Owen is in talks to play the rich CEO of OmniCorp, the organization that turns Detroit police officer Alex Murphy from a near-dead man into a half-human half-robot law enforcer. Of course this is done to make a profit and not protect the citizens of Detroit [...]

Monsters University

Pixar always has something for their fans to look forward to every year, and next year will be the first time the studio has done a prequel. We saw a brief glimpse of what Mike and Sully did during their studies at Monsters University; now Billy Crystal is giving his thoughts on the film.

Episode 05: ParaNorman Osborn

Rum. Curaçao liqueur. Lime juice. That, my friends, is a Mai Tai - a delicious cocktail I've been enjoying down by the beach for the past couple of days. Hello folks, it's Adam Frazier aka FamousMonster and I'm currently listening to Stephen King audiobooks while sipping from an bottomless pitcher of Mai Tai.

Tim Grant is busying carving a canoe out of a single solitary piece of wood and David Allen is down by the lagoon painting watercolors and waxing poetic on the brilliance of James Gunn's Slither to the natives.

If you missed our previous transmissions, let me explain how this works. In the year 1991, US Flight 1313 experienced a mysterious, magnetic anomaly somewhere over the South Pacific. Engines failed, pilots cursed and prayed to their Gods, and three boys (that's us!) washed ashore on Skull-Face Island, which of course is an ISLAND in the SHAPE of a SKULL! How cool is that!? [...]

David Fincher No Longer Attached To Direct ‘Cleopatra’

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 08:32 AM PDT

David Fincher

David Fincher fans may want to stop waiting for his Cleopatra film, starring Angelina Jolie, to start filming, because he will never get around to directing it. Vulture is reporting that talks between Fincher and Sony Pictures have broken down, and Fincher has now taken himself out of the director's spot. The studio does however have a couple of candidates in mind that could replace Fincher.

Among those Sony is considering is Academy Award-winning Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain). However, the report says that no official offer has been made nor has anyone entered negotiations [...]

Paul Ryan Uses Twisted Sister Song; Dee Snider Is Not Gonna Take It

Paul Ryan Sadface Image

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan chose to take the stage at a Pennsylvania rally with Twisted Sister's 1984 hit "We're Not Gonna Take It" blasting in the background and Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider is none too pleased.

In a statement relayed through his manager, Snider said, "I emphatically denounce Paul Ryan's use of my band Twisted Sister's song, 'We're Not Gonna Take It,' in any capacity," adding that, "there is almost nothing he stands for that I agree with except the use of the P90X." [...]
