Astronaut Neil Armstrong, True-Life Superhero and First Man On The Moon, Dies At 82

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon

Neil Armstrong, who will forever be etched in the world's memory as the first person ever to set foot on the Moon, died today after complications arose from cardiovascular procedures, according to CBS News. He was 82. This is, for sure, a dark day in American history.

Armstrong represented a class of astronaut that every boy of my generation and subsequent ones aspired to be like at one point, a true hero among so many paper ones. While the comic and sci-fi/fantasy genres have their heroes and influences and outright wondrous figures by way of mythical, heroic, and positive, Neil Armstrong, in his true, reality human flesh and blood of a man, TRULY represented those aforementioned attributes. The feat he achieved by landing on the Moon with his crew of the Apollo 11 back on July 20, 1969, had stood and will stand ever more so now in his passing as one of the most breathtaking and inspiring images of all time, certainly the television footage remains arguably the greatest iconic image in the history of broadcasting. Millions upon millions of people stood frozen at television sets and large screens put up all over the world when the event happened, an all too rare time of a communion of people put together for a POSITIVE cause. Armstrong, at the helm of it all, was the perfect choice of astronaut at the time, with his rugged good looks, calm, strong demeanor, and every boy's hero kind of swagger [...]

‘Drake’s Fortune’ Adaptation Brings In ‘National Treasure’ Scribes To Pen Script

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

It's been difficult to get a film adaptation of Drake's Fortune into production, and with Neil Burger taking himself out to direct the project, fans of the video game will have to wait a lot longer before they can see Drake seek a lost treasure. But Sony is hiring two writers who are familiar with the themes of Drake's Fortune, which may help steer the adaptation into the right direction.

Variety reports that National Treasure scribes Marianne and Cormac Wibberley have been hired to write the script for the film. The recent hiring is a smart move as the two have had plenty of experience writing about riddles, puzzles, and ancient hidden treasures [...]

$5 MP3 Album Deal: Deep Purple ‘Made In Japan’

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Deep Purple

Deep Purple's red hot sonic piece of meteorite, the rock your socks off live album, Made In Japan, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.

Originally available for purchase way back in 1973, this album crystallizes and encapsulates all the hard rocking fervor that is the British group Deep Purple. The band has gone (and continues to go) through many personnel changes throughout its 45-year-plus career. But on this live album, recorded during their Machine Head tour - which arguably stands as their most well known and successful record - with the lineup of guitar tunesmith Richie Blackmore, the neo-classical and fast-fingered posturing of the late Jon Lord on keyboards, the rhythm section cannonball through your chest of Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums, and of course the wailing, notes sometimes sung so high only a cocker spaniel can hear it warbling of lead singer Ian Gillan, the band is like a rocket ship out of control. Amped up versions of well known Purple tracks "Highway Star," "Child in Time," the smoldering electric bluesy "Lazy," the pounding riff into the earth "Space Truckin'," and of course the seminal played on radio and by cover bands coast to coast incessantly "Smoke on the Water" get the live treatment. Most of these songs are elongated and spontaneously performed, much unlike their studio versions, and the result ultimately whips the crowd up into a frenzy. This deluxe edition also includes some songs that were not on the original release, "Black Night" (which for my money, is the best track on the record) and the macho, pumped-up balls-out rocker, "Speed King." Made In Japan is money well spent for a collection such as this, for a live record that showcases a band at their absolute peak and power and yet still remains criminally, headshakingly underrated, in the world of hard rock and roll.

Happy Birthday to KISS’ Gene Simmons and Judas Priest’s Rob Halford!

Gene Simmons and Rob Halford

Happy Birthday today to two iconic figures of hard rock, the firebreathing demon of KISS, Gene Simmons, and the wailing, high-pitched and demonic bottom-ended harbringer of all things early British heavy metal, Rob Halford of Judas Priest.

Both men are downright revolutionary in what they bring and continue to bring to their respective bands, although arguably Kiss and Judas Priest while certainly equally loved by fans of hard rock/heavy metal, are two decidedly different bands for sure.

Simmons was born Chaim Weitz in Haifa, Israel on August 25, 1949. It has been written that Simmons' mother, Florence, and her brother Larry, survived the Holocaust a few years before Chaim was born. The Weitz family moved to Queens, New York when Chaim was 8 years old. By the time he was a teenager, he became known as Gene Simmons, and started tooling around in local bands, first one called Lynx, then The Missing Links, and others as well. About a half a decade went by when he formed Wicked Lester with himself on bass and buddy Stanley Harvey Eisen on rhythm guitar and lead vocals (Eisen also eventually sported a moniker change and became known as Paul Stanley.) Wicked Lester went through some crisis modes with their lineups and ended with the two disbanding that unit even though a record deal had been in place. For their next project, the two found a drummer in Peter Criscoula and a lead guitarist in Paul Frehley. THOSE two changed their names as well to Peter Criss and Ace Frehley respectively and thus the new quartet, known as KISS, was born [...]
