Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Tom Hardy Team Up For Anti-Poaching Project Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:00 PM PDT One's an environmentalist, one is a vegan, and the other is a rising star. You may not see it now, but the three have a lot in common. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Hardy will be working on an animal trafficking project. According to the trade, Hardy has come up with an idea that would play out much like Steven Soderbergh's Academy Award-winning film Traffic, only this time characters involved in multiple storylines will be affected by their actions relating to poaching. Warner Bros will be the studio to set up the project and is currently filing through writers to pen a script. Hardy's inspiration for the story came from friends who served on a special anti-poacher task force [...] |
Blu-ray Review: The Hunger Games Posted: 27 Aug 2012 04:58 PM PDT The Hunger Games Blu-ray | DVD DIRECTOR: Gary Ross DIRECTOR: Gary Ross WRITER: Billy Ray, Suzanne Collins, Gary Ross STARRING: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, Alexander Ludwig, Amandla Stenberg, Wes Bentley, Donald Sutherland, Willow Shields, Paula Malcolmson, Toby Jones Lionsgate Home Entertainment RELEASE DATE: August 17, 2012 Before a movie adaptation of The Hunger Games was announced, I knew not one thing about it, not even the title. Going into finally seeing the movie for myself, I knew it was based on a wildly popular book series and whatever small story and character tidbits picked up while writing about various casting news and such. This is how I prefer going into any movie, whether it be an adaptation or sequel or completely original, so that there is no expectation whatsoever. The premise is simple, yet also quite brutal. After an apocalyptic event transforms North America, a wealthy government called the Capitol takes total control over the less-wealthy people and forms them into thirteen districts. After an uprising by the people ultimately results in the destruction of one of the districts, an unthinkable punishment is put into effect to keep everyone in check: each year, one boy and one girl ages 12-18 from each of the twelve districts will be selected at random to compete in the Hunger Games, where all 24 will fight to the death until only one remains. Countdown To Doctor Who: Watch ‘Pond Life’ Part 1 Now! Posted: 27 Aug 2012 03:00 PM PDT In the run-up to the premiere of Doctor Who Series 7, the BBC is posting a short mini web series this week called Pond Life that focuses on the everyday life of Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) when they're away from their travels with the Doctor (Matt Smith). You can check out part one below. Pond Life will spearhead directly into the events of the debut episode of Series 7, which is called Asylum of the Daleks. It is essentially a prequel that sets the tone for Amy's and Rory's relationship, but also their friendship with the Doctor. The couple will be departing the series this season, after which the Doctor will come across new companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) [...] |
Director Jose Padilha Reportedly Miserable With Studio Over ‘Robocop’ Remake Posted: 27 Aug 2012 01:59 PM PDT Hugh Laurie taking a pass on the villain role in Jose Padilha's Robocop may have been a sign of things to come. Apparently things aren't looking good for the upcoming remake, and filming hasn't even started yet. The rift is between Padilha and MGM. Studio heads and directors butting heads isn't anything new really. But things have gotten so bad that Padilha talked about his problems to his colleague and Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles about the developmental problems that are occurring before production begins next September. ScreenCrush found a translated interview made by Cinemacom Rapadura. According to the report, the studio is getting in the way of Padilha's vision for the film. Not so surprising since a studio gives their input on what they would like to see in a film that they will fund and distribute. But things are so bad between Padilha and MGM that Padilha can't even get around to putting his ideas in the film [...] |
Check This Out: ‘Looper’ 8-Bit Video Game Trailer Posted: 27 Aug 2012 01:00 PM PDT There's nothing really new about movies being adapted into video games or visa versa. Oftentimes both products don't even hold a candle to their counterparts. But on those rare occasions, it can work. Using some trailer footage and other material from Rian Johnson's upcoming sci-fi film Looper, Deepak Chetty created Looper The Movie The 8-Bit Video Game. The trailer doesn't use some cutting edge technology you would see on a PS3 or XBOX 360; instead, Chetty created an 8-bit trailer. Check it out below. Watching the trailer, there is a feeling of nostalgia that overwhelmed me. The music, the tone, the visuals, even the "press start" option all brought me back to the days of 8-bit video games [...] |

Remembering The Late Tony Scott, Director Of ‘Top Gun,’ ‘True Romance,’ ‘The Hunger’ Posted: 27 Aug 2012 09:58 AM PDT We at Geeks of Doom and everyone around the cinema community and the globe are still stunned by the news last week that film director Tony Scott, responsible for so many of the fun, in your face action films of the 1980s and beyond, jumped to his death off of a bridge at the age of 68. Certainly this is a story that no one anticipated coming, and for sure there will be question marks that will go unanswered forever. Why this vibrant, talented, vivid, energetic and colorful individual would commit such an act is harrowing, tragic, and ultimately extremely sad (there is speculation about this health, but no official word yet). Klieg lights have been snuffed in Hollywood metaphorically from this event, and the legacy of Tony Scott will always endure and hopefully shine even brighter than it did when he was with us. In memoriam of the man, it's very, very easy to be forgiving and forgetful when an artist like Scott passes away, and in the quick emotional haze of these kind of events, it's very easy to suddenly give the deceased artist a free pass of his entire body of work. But, in all fairness and honesty, and that's the only way this reporter can give it to you folks, there's no denying that the body of cinematic work that Tony Scott produced in his lifetime were equally loved, hated, critically panned, enjoyed by movie goers and critics, they sported huge box office returns, they sported huge box office failures, this kind of list can go on and on [...] |
Watch Now: What If John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ Had Its Own Line Of Action Figures? Posted: 27 Aug 2012 08:28 AM PDT "Real alien ooze!" First of all, before you ask, there was not a line of action figures made to coincide with the release of John Carpenter's classic sci-fi chiller The Thing back in the summer of 1982. It was too much of a disaster in the eyes of critics, audiences, and the executives at Universal Pictures at the time for one to even be considered. By then creating a toy line as part of the merchandising blitz for a major studio genre release was all part of the game. Planet of the Apes broke the mold, but Star Wars and Superman made toys a vital part of a studio blockbuster's ancillary revenue. Even movies that made less money (and lost more money) and had a lesser cultural impact than The Thing got their own line of poseable figures, playsets, plastic vehicles, and guns that fired objects that weren't supposed to be ingested but more often than not ended up lodged in some kid's tracheo. I still recall seeing Judge Dredd figures hanging sadly off of sagging metal hooks in the toy section of my neighborhood Dollar General as late as 1998 [...] |
Ben Affleck NOT Directing ‘Justice League’; The Wachowskis Now Rumored For The Job Posted: 27 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT Almost three weeks ago we reported that actor/filmmaker Ben Affleck was on Warner Bros.' shortlist to direct their long-gestating Justice League movie that has picked up some serious heat in the wake of Marvel's The Avengers banking over a billion dollars worldwide. Ever since refocusing his career on directing, Affleck has seen his stock in Tinseltown skyrocket and given that he has experience working with talented ensemble casts and staging intricate action sequences, it seemed that he would be a natural fit to bring the mightiest heroes in the DC Universe to the silver screen. It appears, sadly, that the proverbial gun was jumped like so many sharks on network television. Affleck, whose latest film (as both actor and director) Argo opens next month and who had signed on to mount an ambitious adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel The Stand at Warner Bros. next, confirmed the truth behind those potentially exciting Justice League rumors in an exclusive interview with the Canadian website 24 Hours Vancouver [...] |
