Disney In Depth: Blu-ray Review: ‘Treasure Planet’ 10th Anniversary Edition Posted: 02 Aug 2012 07:58 PM PDT November 27, 2002. That was the day the greatly overlooked and underappreciated Treasure Planet launched into theatres, without much fanfare. Mixed critical reviews certainly did not help encourage moviegoers to head into cinemas to see Disney's latest action-adventure flick, as opposed to the highly-popular Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. As a result, the big-budget animated film flopped at the box office, sinking the company's efforts at exploring the sci-fi space genre. Well, until John Carter premiered, and we all know how that turned out. After ten years, Disney is breathing new life into the cult fantasy favorite by releasing Treasure Planet on Blu-ray. Will this generate the attention of new fans to check out the studio's 43rd animated feature? Let's hope so. Joseph Gordon-Levitt energizes Jim Hawkins, the rebellious teenage protagonist, with boyish spirit and angst. Hawkins' carefree existence of solar sailing on his home planet closes when a monster-like pilot's spaceship crashes near his family's inn, leaving behind a map of the legendary Treasure Planet. All of those daring stories of pirates and cyborgs Jim read about as a boy were real, and he and his mom's persnickety friend, Dr. Doppler (the perfectly-cast David Hyde Pierce) set off to charter a mission to find that "Loot of a Thousand Worlds." Posted: 02 Aug 2012 07:05 PM PDT As the Jack Ryan reboot, starring Chris Pine, inches closer towards production, director and star Kenneth Branagah is still looking for someone who could play Jack Ryan's wife. A report from Deadline says that Keira Knightley, Evangeline Lilly, and Felicity Jones are among the actresses on a shortlist for the lead role. It has also been confirmed that Total Recall co-stars Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are no longer being considered for the role [...] |
Comic Review: Soul Stealer: The Collectors Edition Posted: 02 Aug 2012 06:02 PM PDT Soul Stealer The Collectors Edition Written by Michael Easton Art by Christopher Shy Black Watch Comics Release Date: August 1, 2012 Cover Price: $59.99 If you were to list the themes that were present in Soul Stealer, combined they would all seem like an impossibly tall order to fill. Concepts such as life, death, love, time travel, mythology, humanity, friendship, and betrayal all make an appearance within this book. Nearly every major theme that shaped some of the greatest literature and films throughout history are present in Soul Stealer, but at its core this graphic novel can be summed up in one question. If you lost true love how much of your humanity would you be willing to lose to get it back? Soul Stealer at its core is simply and truly a love story. This is not a love story in which angst-ridden heroes lament lost loves. You also won't find hip young men and woman shooting cleverly ironic quips at one another before gracefully tumbling into bed with each other. Soul Stealer portrays the beautiful universal truth about love, but not before stripping its main characters of anything and everything pleasant in this world. Everything comes at a price in Soul Stealer and love is no exception. The luxury of growing old with someone is bent and perverted in such a way that by the end of this book, what could traditionally be defined as happiness quickly becomes agony. Soul Stealer is gracefully written in a way that leaves its characters broken but empowered, destroyed yet reborn [...] |

Amidst Kristen Stewart Scandal, Summit Moves Forward With ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ As Planned Posted: 02 Aug 2012 04:14 PM PDT By now anyone familiar with The Twilight Saga has heard about the scandal involving star Kristen Stewart, who had a little fling with her married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders while still being very much involved with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. Obviously the news did not go over well with the series' rabid fanbase, leading many to wonder whether Stewart's actions might cause severe damage to the Twilight franchise going forward. [...] |
Dan Aykroyd Confirms Bill Murray Will Not Be In ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Posted: 02 Aug 2012 03:07 PM PDT This endless "will Bill Murray be in Ghostbusters 3" tug-of-war was bound to end sooner or later. Just be glad that it is ending sooner and not later, because today may be the day that we hear the last of this kind of news. Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that Billy Murray will not reprise his role as Peter Venkman in the third Ghostbusters film. Murray has been teetering back and forth on reprising his role as Venkman, but he's always leaned towards not coming back. Let's just hope that this will be the last we hear of this [...] |
WTF?! ‘Manos, The Hands Of Fate’ Is Now An Old School Video Game Posted: 02 Aug 2012 01:00 PM PDT Nearly every major movie released since the birth of the Atari 2600 has given rise to its own tie-in video game. Some of them were great, but most of them were so dreadful and often had so little to do with the actual movie that - especially in the case of Atari's infamous E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial game from 1982 - they ended up buried in a landfill next to the corpses of stoolies whacked by the Mafia. They're an integral part of a tentpole movie's marketing campaign. In certain cases, such as the well-received Ghostbusters game from a few years ago, a beloved film property can be revived as a video game in order to appeal to a new generation of admirers. You would never expect Manos, the Hands of Fate to be one of those privileged titles, but the 1966 occult horror feature made in El Paso, TX, by a fertilizer salesman to win a bet and is legendary for being one of the worst movies ever to see the light of a film projector has become a 2D side-scrolling iOS platform game app from FreakZone Games soon to be available for iPhones and Androids. You can watch a game play trailer here below [...] |
Comic Review: Merciless: The Rise of Ming #3 Posted: 02 Aug 2012 12:00 PM PDT Merciless: The Rise of Ming #3 Written by Scott Beatty Art by Ron Adrian Colors by Roni Setiawan Letters by Simon Bowland Cover by Alex Ross Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: August 1, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Merciless: The Rise of Ming #3 is a great sci-fi action/thriller. From front to back, it's got everything that fans of classic science fiction could ask for. And it's cooler because it's Ming the Merciless. Writer Scott Beatty gives us another chapter in the origin of Ming the Merciless, and it's a great roller coaster ride. This is CLASSIC sci-fi writing, but the format is updated for today's audience. It's action from cover to cover and you only catch your breath and the very end...and then there's the last page. Beatty has been a fantastic science fiction writer for awhile now (his Buck Rogers series from Dynamite is totally underrated), and it's nice to see him take the reins on another series. What I also like about this series is that it's not just a spin-off of Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist that doesn't need to exist. The audience needs to know how Ming got so merciless, and it's nice that it flows into the current Flash Gordon series [...] |
Drew Barrymore Directing The Apocalyptic-Themed Film ‘The End’ Posted: 02 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT Although 2012 is the year that the world comes to an end, studios are still planning for films to be released many years after. It's always good to have a back-up plan, you know, just in case the apocalypse doesn't happen. Joking aside, Warner Bros. would like to get into the world-ending business by giving Drew Barrymore the job of directing a film simply titled The End. The Hollywood Reporter says the film will focus on how several people spend their last day on Earth. But rather than take a comedic approach like Seeking A Friend for the End of The World and Edgar Wright's upcoming World's End or an action approach like Roland Emmerich's 2012, The End will be "uplifting and humanistic rather than a downer, a meditation not on death but on life." Characters in the film will range from "a sixtysomething radio personality in London intent on broadcasting until the end, a father trying to make it through the chaos in Tokyo to reach his wife and baby and a teenage couple in the American Midwest being pulled in different directions by their families." Series 7 ‘Doctor Who’ Trailer Has Dinosaurs On A Spaceship & Iconic Daleks Of Death! You can check it out at the bottom of this post. Doctor Who Series 7 is believed to premiere on August 25 this year, with the first half being televised before the Christmas Special, the Christmas Special introducing new companion Clara played by Jenna Louise-Coleman, and then the second half of the season rounding everything up during the first half of 2013 [...] |
New Photos For Dan Bradley’s ‘Red Dawn’ Reboot Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT Before MGM fell into financial hardship, they were to release a multitude of films: Skyfall, Cabin in the Woods, The Hobbit (which was to be directed by Guillermo del Toro at the time), and Red Dawn. But now that MGM is on the straightened financial arrow and have found distributors to help them with their films, all four are to be released this year. However, we haven't seen too much from the Red Dawn camp. Well a few new photos have appeared online, reminding us that the film is coming in for its scheduled November release. These photos (which you can check out below) could just be a tease of what is to come in a few days. Maybe FilmDistrict will release the first trailer or a handful of new photos, but my guess is that the film's first trailer will appear online sometime in the near future [...] |
Prometheus 2, Men In Black 4, Ted 2, American Pie 5 & Snow White and The Huntsman 2 All Possible Posted: 02 Aug 2012 08:00 AM PDT When movies make money, the studios behind them make sequels. This is no secret. And with the summer's biggest movies now behind us, it's time to start looking at which of the movies we've seen released over the course of the past few months might be getting sequels. Some are obvious, while others might come as a bit of a surprise. Continue reading to see what studios are looking at for potential sequels and which talent is already locked in. [...] |
