$5 MP3 Album Deal: Van Morrison ‘Moondance’ Posted: 09 Aug 2012 05:15 AM PDT Moondance, one of the standout albums in a sea of them by Irish singer/songwriter Van Morrison, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5. Originally released in 1970, the album remains a masterful potboiler of emotional sounds and styles. Musical fabrics like somber soul, R&B, jazz and blues are deftly woven together to create a wonderful attack on the senses and soul. "Moondance," "And It Stoned Me," "Caravan," and the hauntingly, achingly glass in the heart ballad "Into the Mystic" are the more well-known songs, but tracks like "Come Running," "These Dreams of You," and "Everyone" also keep Morrison's musical gambit in full river deep, mountain high force. Moondance (along with a lot of other of his releases) is an essential recording for any musical taste or collection. Posted: 08 Aug 2012 06:40 PM PDT Thun'Da #1 Written by Robert Place Napton Art by Cliff Richards Colored by Esther Sanz Letters by Marshall Dillion Cover by Jae Lee Thun'Da Created by Frank Frazetta Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: August 8, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 I have to admit, I don't know anything about the main character of this book, and I'm guessing, neither do you. But, that's a GOOD THING. Because Thun'Da #1 is ALL intro, and believe me, it's one heck of a ride. Writer Robert Place Napton does a really good job here of writing this first issue as almost a silent issue, but there's a purpose for that, unlike so many comics that are just trying to copy the infamous GI Joe #21. First, we're introduced to our hero under extreme circumstances. VERY extreme. From there, it only gets worse. It's safe to say that he's thrust into a world that even he doesn't believe exists. Someplace where he's got to survive on barely his wits alone. What's even more entertaining is that he has no memory of who he is, where he's from, or what he can do. So, he's basically coming at this whole story from the audience's point of view, which is really refreshing. I found this comic to be a very fun read. [...] |
Watch This Behind-The-Scenes Footage For Laika’s Newest Animated Feature ‘ParaNorman’ Posted: 08 Aug 2012 06:11 PM PDT Putting together a full-length stop-motion animated feature is perhaps the most tedious thing to watch. Every movement has to be just right, it may be a long process, but it will all pay off in the end. So now a new featurette for ParaNorman shows just how important it is to get things right. Check out the video below. The production process for a stop-motion animated feature is just amazing. Watching the ParaNorman animators piece together all the characters, design the set pieces, and make the puppets move is something that future filmmakers and animators will truly enjoy. But if you're of the group that just loves these behind-the-scenes footage, then I suggest you watch the video below [...] |
Ben Affleck On Warner Bros.’ Shortlist To Direct ‘Justice League’ Posted: 08 Aug 2012 04:04 PM PDT The world of silver screen superheroics is not unknown territory for actor/director Ben Affleck. During the early years of his post-Good Will Hunting career the Academy Award-winner was rumored to be in the running to play both Batman and Superman. Then in 2003 he finally got his chance to play a comic book hero on film when he top-lined Mark Steven Johnson's bloated Daredevil adaptation. Although that movie was a very nice moneymaker for financier 20th Century Fox the withering reviews and lack of desire from fans for a sequel kept any further Daredevil features on ice to this day. During that time Affleck has gone from being one of Hollywood's rising star to a tabloid and internet punching bag due to some ill-advised career and relationship decisions to once again being the toast of Tinseltown with his well-received move into working behind the camera with his well-received dramas Gone Baby Gone and The Town. It was the latter film that officially launched Affleck on his second career as a prestigious filmmaker; his third film as a director, Argo (which he also stars in), opens next month and is garnering some impressive buzz thus far. On the strength of his previous films and the soon-to-be-released Argo Warner Bros. signed Affleck to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's epic apocalyptic horror-fantasy The Stand last October. Now it seems Warners is grooming the more talented half of the entity once known as Bennifer for another huge project the studio has been looking to get off the ground for several years [...] |
Beta Beat: Moving Forward Into World Of Warcraft’s ‘Mists Of Pandaria’ Posted: 08 Aug 2012 03:20 PM PDT Well kids, another year has passed and we are close to a new World of Warcraft expansion. First though, let's take a look back at the Cataclysm. As a guild, Geeks Of Doom had a pretty big expansion. We saw the return of a lot of old faces, the departure of some, but overall we added a ton of new members. We made further progression in raiding than we ever had before as a guild. While we stalled a little in Firelands due to healer issues and leadership changes, we came back strong in Dragon Soul (DS), and killed Deathwing before the nerfs really hit hard. With the widespread down-time we're experiencing at the end of this expansion (what's the deal with that Blizzard? At least Wrath of the Lich King [WotLK] gave us Ruby Sanctum to make you feel like there was something different to do toward the end), I figured I would give a quick idea of where GoD is heading in the next expansion, and some of the things we're looking forward to in Mist of Pandaria [...] |
Joss Whedon Will Contribute Creatively For Marvel Studios Until 2015 Posted: 08 Aug 2012 02:30 PM PDT Yesterday we reported that Walt Disney Studios had hired Joss Whedon to direct The Avengers 2. But the exciting news doesn't stop there. The new deal between Disney and Whedon also included a live-action series for television, which would be produced by The Avengers director himself. So as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, the studio is releasing more details about the deal that was made yesterday, including the TV series made for ABC and how involved Whedon will be in the creative process for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe [...] |
Comic Review: Conan the Barbarian #7 Posted: 08 Aug 2012 01:45 PM PDT Conan the Barbarian #7 Written by Brian Wood Art by Becky Cloonan Colors by Dave Stewart Letters by Richard Starkings and Comicraft Cover by Massimo Carnevale Dark Horse Comics Release Date: August 8, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Conan the Barbarian #7 features a tale as old as time. Man takes girlfriend home to meet his mother, only, it's Conan the Barbarian and his girlfriend is Belit. So, you can imagine that things get a little sticky when the meeting goes down. Author Brian Wood, who has been absolutely KILLING it on this series, turns out another fantastic issue! I've been reading Conan comics since the mid 80s, and I've never read a story quite like this one. Conan brings Belit home to meet his mother, and things... well, they don't go as expected, I'll just leave it at that [...] |

Stanley Kubrick’s Long Lost Debut ‘Fear and Desire’ Premieres On Blu-ray In October Posted: 08 Aug 2012 12:26 PM PDT When filmmaker Stanley Kubrick died in March 1999 a giant had passed from this mortal coil. Kubrick left behind an incredible body of work, and the majority of his films are regarded as classic, groundbreaking works of cinema. Nearly all of his filmography is available on DVD and Blu-ray, with one glaring exception: Fear and Desire, Kubrick's 1953 directorial debut. The movie tells the tale of a squad of soldiers who must make their way through enemy territory to rejoin their unit. Along the way they capture a young peasant girl (Virginia Leith) and tie her to a tree. She is subsequently tormented by a mentally unbalanced soldier played by future filmmaker Paul Mazursky. The squad soon determines the location of an enemy base and embark on a dangerous mission to kill its commanding officer [...] |

Watch Now: Playing Video Games Makes Batman Angry In ‘The Dark Knight Rages’ Posted: 08 Aug 2012 10:24 AM PDT Batman is one of the greatest superheroes the world has ever known. He's a brilliant detective and a master at kicking ass and looking awesome while doing it all. He has encountered a rogues gallery of freaks, monsters, psychos, and other devious criminal minds who would make Hannibal Lecter soil his britches. But for some reason he just can't seem to get a handle on playing video games. In fact, they tend to make him irrationally angry, as you'll see in this clever short video The Dark Knight Rages put together by the little comedic geniuses at Crave Online. You can watch the video here below. If you've ever wanted to see Batman and his youthful ward in crimefighting Robin attempt to bond over a hearty round of Xbox 360 that degenerates into an all-out brutal smackdown with Robin wondering out loud why his suit has nipples, then you have come to the right place. This vid features a lot of references to Batman movies and TV shows past and present, but come on Bats, that whole "my parents are dead" bit will only excuse so much in life [...] |
