Posted: 01 Nov 2012 07:47 PM PDT Damsels #1 Story by Leah Moore and John Reppion Illustrated by Aneke Letters by Simon Bowland Colors by Ivan Nunes Covers by J. Scott Campbell and John Chen Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: September 13, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Damsels is not your grandma's renaissance faire, unless of course she happens to have endless reserves of energy, then perhaps it is. Our popular culture seems to be tiring of the impending apocalypse or equivalent and looking to the simpler days of yore, that never was, for stories. Not to worry, zombies still have lots of brains to eat and our own modern minds can't seem to make a fairy tale without that sense of great fear and trepidation intrinsic to the plot. Think Grimm, Once Upon a Time or in the comic world Fables or Fairest where they take cute folk tales from our youth and weird those up so adults will care about them. I like this escapist concept and there are endless paths for a narrative to go when your main characters are not instagraming what they had for lunch from their Ipads. Damsels answers that challenge of making a new series with a popular premise stand out by bringing lots of cinematic style action and chaos into the mix. Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and Rapunzel may never be the same again. [...] |

Jamie Foxx In Negotiations To Play Electro In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Posted: 01 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PDT Marc Webb was very close to not directing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but he was able to work a few things out that would allow him to return to helm the sequel. With Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone set to reprise their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy respectively, Webb was looking for a couple of actors to fill new roles. We previously reported that Shailene Woodley signed on for a small role as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and if that film was successful her role would be expanded in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Which would make sense given what happens to Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man lore. However in that same report it was rumored that Electro would be the villain in the sequel. That rumor is now a fact as Django Unchained star Jamie Foxx is attached to the role. [...] |
Disney In Depth: Disney To Acquire Lucasfilm, An Analysis From The Disney Fan Perspective Posted: 01 Nov 2012 04:00 PM PDT We were all shocked to discover when Darth Vader revealed himself to be Luke Skywalker's father. But we experienced perhaps even more shock when news broke this week that The Walt Disney Company was acquiring Lucasfilm, George Lucas' 41-years-strong company. Now, Mickey Mouse will be both Vader's and Luke's parent, though not by blood -- what an awkward "modern family" that deserves some critical examination. Puns and jokes aside, this $4 billion purchase follows what has been a whirlwind of new ventures for Disney in just the past seven years since Bob Iger attained the role of CEO of The Walt Disney Company. 2006 marked Disney's purchase of Pixar. 2009 signified Disney's purchase of Marvel. And now 2012 represents news of Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm. One can only imagine what the Mouse House will obtain in 2015 if this ironically-consistent pattern of buying a big entity every three years continues. These heavily-expensive, but ingenious acquisitions reflect Disney's focus of branding and leveraging well-known and well-received properties [...] |
Francis Lawrence To Direct ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ Two-Part Finale Posted: 01 Nov 2012 02:30 PM PDT Production for Catching Fire, the sequel adaptation for Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, is already underway with Francis Lawrence (Constantine & I am Legend) serving as director. Originally it was thought that Lionsgate would move forward with a new director overseeing production for the two-part finale adaptation of Mockingjay. Well, that is no longer the case as Collider reports that Lawrence will be directing the final two films of The Hunger Games trilogy. Collider was the very first to discover details the latest deal, which is still very hot so it could be a while before Lionsgate officially announces the deal as set. Game Changer screenwriter Danny Strong is currently busy adapting the final two parts of Mockingjay. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I arrives on November 21, 2014, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II hits theaters the following year on November 20th, 2015 [...] |
That’s A Bingo! Christoph Waltz In Talks To Join ‘The Muppets 2′ Posted: 01 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PDT It's not entirely uncommon to hear of swirling casting rumors before a film heads into production. But when a casting rumor is this big, one can't help but share the exciting possibility of a great actor joining a great movie. According to sources, Christoph Waltz is in talks to star in The Muppets 2 as an Interpol inspector. Other roles for the Europe-set caper comedy include a "Russian femme fatale and a male lead whose intentions are always in question." There will also be a slew of cameo roles that need to be filled as well. [...] |
Posted: 01 Nov 2012 11:30 AM PDT Ghost #1 Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick Art by Phil Noto Letters by Richard Starkings and Comicraft Covers by Phil Noto & Alex Ross Dark Horse Comics Release Date: October 24, 2012 Cover Price: $2.99 Kelly Sue DeConnick is, needless to say, a fantastic writer. I just don't know if Ghost was right for her. You'd think it would be a no-brainer. A woman who's great at writing strong female leads should be the perfect fit, right? Unfortunately, she doesn't quite hit the mark with this issue. First off, for a first issue, it's not really a great jumping on point. It feels like you're coming in during the middle of a story. Beyond that, the dialogue is entertaining and the characters are fun. I just wish it was more of an introduction than it is. [...] |

Mark Hamill Shares His Thoughts On Disney Acquiring Lucasfilm Posted: 01 Nov 2012 09:55 AM PDT Even the one who brought order to the Force was shocked to hear Lucasfilm being purchased by Disney. Though much of the talk has been about the sale, reactions, and a possible plot for Star Wars: Episode VII, we are finally getting thoughts on what one of the Star Wars actors think about the sale. In a recent interview, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, revealed that like many of us, he discovered the news of Disney buying Lucasfilm on the 'net. Apparently he missed one very important call. Rumor For Your Thoughts: ‘Modern Warfare 4′ Already Confirmed? Posted: 01 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PDT It's almost a rhetorical question to ask---the Call of Duty video game franchise has grossed an insane amount of money over the past few years---but it's still something that does have a question mark at the end. Has Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 been confirmed already, a couple of weeks before Call of Duty: Black Ops II arrives? According to Bill Murray (no, not that one), the actor who voices the popular character Captain Price, development on the game has already begun. [...] |

George Lucas To Donate Most Of His $4 Billion To Education Charity Posted: 01 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PDT The biggest news to come out of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion isn't the size of the deal, the number of Star Wars films that will come out in the next few years, or that Episode VII could be an original story. No, the biggest news to come out of this acquisition is how George Lucas will use his $4 billion. A spokesman for Lucasfilm shares that Lucas plans to "donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors." [...] |
