Justin Timberlake buys stake in MySpace

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 02:58 AM PDT

Justin Timberlake buys stake in MySpaceThe site was the most popular social networking forum in 2006, until its users flocked to Facebook.com - but Timberlake is hoping to change that by focusing on music.

After taking a stake of the website, the star will take on a lead role as part of MySpace''s 35-million-dollars acquisition by online advertising network Specific Media from News Corporation, reports Contactmusic.

A statement from the pop star/actor read, "There''s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect.

"Myspace has the potential to be that place. Art is inspired by people and vice versa, so there''s a natural social component to entertainment. I''m excited to help revitalize Myspace by using its social media platform to bring artists and fans together in one community," the statement added.

Specific Ceo Tim Vanderhook adds, "We look forward to partnering with someone as talented as Justin Timberlake who will lead the business strategy with his creative ideas and vision for transforming MySpace."

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 03:52 PM PDT

google talk guru answersBots — like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave — are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn’t have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like “score detroit red wings” or “sushi R3N 1Y1.”

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It’s well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

What WebOS Means To HP, Linux, And You

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 01:52 PM PDT

In John’s review of the new HP TouchPad, he claimed that “WebOS is the real star of this show. The OS offers true multi-tasking and uses a system of ?cards? and ?stacks? to display active applications.” I think it’s worthwhile to remind everyone that WebOS is built atop the Linux kernel, and that has several interesting ramifications. HP has continued Palm’s dedication to user experience, and WebOS should make it abundantly clear that “Linux” need not be synonymous with “complex and arcane”. But there’s a lot more than just superficial window dressing to consider.

Robotic armpit sweats you out of harm’s way, Uncanny Valley just got a lot stinkier

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 11:52 AM PDT

London-based designer Kevin Grennan has a particular stance on the yet-to-be-fought Robots vs Humans war — it’ll stink, literally. Mocking a part of our bodies we spackle to stop secretions, this Brit created a robotic armpit that sweats out pheromones so you stay out of danger. As part of his graduate exhibit at the Royal College of Art, our android-averse artiste has three smelly cyborg concepts up for your schematic consideration: there’s the underarm-equipped, bomb-sniffing bot that’ll warn you away with the scent of human fear, and a picker robot that enchants female assembly liners to work harder, better, faster with its manly musk. Sure it all seems harmless, that is until you enter into a trusting relationship with an oxytocin-spritzing surgical automaton. We don’t blame you if any of the above has you locking the Roomba up for the night — that’s exactly Kevin’s point. But there’s no need to panic just yet, a future filled with “but I’m a real boy” robot-complexes is still a ways off.

Department of Justice probe eyes Sony’s rechargeable battery business

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 09:52 AM PDT

After the headache-inducing bout of hacking woes that beset the corporation in recent weeks, a new Department of Justice-led investigation into Sony’s US electronics division may have the company emptying that aspirin bottle. Details of the inquiry are scarce at the moment, but with the company’s cooperation confirmed, all signs lead to an alleged price fixing of its rechargeable battery business. Citing data from a Tokyo-based research firm, a Bloomberg report indicates that a 2010 market surplus had Sony Electronics (amongst others) lowering battery prices at the expense of less financially-cushioned players. The notorious sector of the multinational’s operations has been in the hot seat before — namely, for actual laptop explosions — but this time ’round the judicial maypole, it seems the Japanese giant may have been partaking in some anti-competitive shenanigans. If the DoJ hammer does happen to fall on Sony’s already bowed head, the company could be facing a very expensive slap on the wrist and a fundamental change to its business practices. Luckily for Sony, we happen to believe in a little something called “innocent until proven guilty.”

A big day for photography news today, thanks to the folks at Olympus. First up is the Pen EP3, the fifth iteration of its PEN Micro Four Thirds line, which manages to mix up pretty much everything while keeping it in the original PEN’s retro-style body.
