‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Karl Urban Confirmed As The New ‘Judge Dredd’

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 08:54 PM PDT

Rumors have been swirling lately that Karl Urban was in line to take on the title role in the new Judge Dredd remake, and the actor wasn't necessarily denying them at the recent San Diego Comic-Con 2010. Now comes word out of Movie-Con III (via Empire) that the rumors have evolved to reality, and Urban will be stepping into the shoes once worn by Sylvester Stallone in the 1995 movie of the same name.

Now, if you're a fan of the '95 movie, this might not be the best news to you, but let's be honest: that was a fairly cheesy adaptation of a popular comic book series. The comic, created by John Wagner, Pat Mills, and Carlos Ezquerra, has been featured in the UK's weekly comic book publication 2000 AD since its debut in 1977. It takes place in a futuristic world where judges are basically super-cops who apprehend, pass judgment upon, and even execute those that they find guilty. [...]

James Cameron Thinks Ex-Wife Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘The Hurt Locker’ Would Have Been Better In 3D

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 07:25 PM PDT

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly recently, Avatar director James Cameron spoke about his ex-wife and fellow Academy Award-nominee for Best Picture and Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow. Cameron talked about competing (and eventually losing) against her at the Oscars and also his thoughts on 3D being used in a smaller movie like Bigelow's Best Picture-winner, The Hurt Locker.

It's no secret that Cameron is the godfather of the 3D revolution, working to prove how incredible it can be when done correctly, and how he hopes that one day the technology's usage will be a given with each film. When talking about The Hurt Locker, and whether it could have been better with 3D, here's what the director had to say:

I think [The Hurt Locker] would have been better in 3D. Absolutely. It wouldn't have been hugely better in 3D, but I'm talking a future where you don't have to put 'in 3D' on the movie poster anymore, the same way you don't put 'in color' on posters anymore. [...]

Words You’ve Been Waiting To Read: ‘Star Wars’ Is Coming To Blu-ray!

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 03:49 PM PDT

Earlier today at Star Wars Celebration V, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox announced something fanboys have been wanting to hear for what feels like a millennium: the beloved Star Wars saga will be finally coming to the realms of high definition Blu-ray.

A bit of a wait is still in your future as the set isn't marked for release until the fall of 2011, but the wait sounds like it will be worth it. The Blu-enhanced Star Wars box set will consist of all six films, bathed in the highest possible visual and audio formats. Also included will be a wealth of special features including documentaries, unseen footage from the Lucasfilm archives, retrospectives, interviews, and rare behind-the-scenes moments.

While speaking about the exciting announcement, the creator himself George Lucas said "Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience Star Wars at home – in pristine high definition. The films have never looked or sounded better." [...]

Does The World Need Another MMO?

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 02:07 PM PDT

There are a slew of new MMOs [massive multiplayer online game] on the way. Many of them are based on big time franchises: DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Star Trek Online come to mind. I even hear there is a MMO that takes place in the Fallout universe in the works. Every thing I've seen for all these games, as it was with MMOs that came before them like Lord of The Rings Online, look great. Good graphics, strong game play, historic franchise, they all look like real winners, real money makers, but that usually isn't the case.

The question isn't what would make a good MMO, but do we really need another MMO? The Marvel MMO never got off the ground because there is only one really successful MMO out there, and we all know what that is. Many others are moving to a free to play, micro transaction model, since the subscription model in most cases isn't working. Just look at Dungeons and Dragons Online, and Lord of The Rings Online and even the game that really started it all EverQuest is going free to play. I'm not saying that these games can't be successful, but the odds are not in their favor [...]

‘Batwoman Returns’ in November

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 09:59 AM PDT

In their week of heavy Batman news, DC Comics announced some news that anyone who was a fan of Greg Rucka's recent run on Detective Comics has been clamoring to hear. We finally have a time frame for the return of Batwoman.

In November, artist J.H. Williams, III will be taking on writing duties for Batwoman #0, a one-shot story bridging the gap between the last appearance of Kate Kane/Batwoman and the new series starting in 2011. Williams will be pulling double duty on Batwoman as writer/artist, but he will have help in the capable hands of W. Haden Blackman and Amy Reeder taking the positions of co-writer and co-artist, respectfully [...]

DC’s ‘Detective Comics’ Recharges with New Writer/Art Team

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 07:40 AM PDT

On Monday, DC Comics announced which artist will join new writer Scott Snyder (American Vampire) for their namesake series, Detective Comics.

Starting in November, artist Jock (The Losers, Green Arrow: Year One, and a recent stint on Detective with Greg Rucka) will join Snyder on one of DC's biggest titles. Snyder has been getting rave reviews for his Vertigo series American Vampire, and DC must certainly be very pleased with Snyder's success to be handing over the reins to this series to him after a relatively short time in the business. Jock also brings a very unique style to the book and while I may be a fan of his style, I'm curious to see if others are as excited about him taking over the series.

But this isn't the only news announced this week. On Friday, DC also announced that artist Francesco Francavilla (Zorro, Garrison) will be drawing a back up feature in Detective Comics, also written by Snyder [...]
