Durham University Offers Harry Potter Course

Durham University will be offering a course that will focus on the world of Harry Potter. But don't expect that their will be classes on potions, charms, flying on brooms, or defense against the dark arts with the Ministry of Magic. There will also be no owls to deliver the mails, flying memos, magic mirrors, or any moving staircases.

The module is entitled Harry Potter and the Age of Illusion. It was created by the head of the Department of Education the Durham University, Dr. Martin Richardson. He said that it will study social and moral issues that were being raised in the best-selling children's book series. The class will use the works of the British author J. K. Rowling to examine modern society on its prejudices, citizenship, and inequality. As of now, about 80 undergraduates have enrolled on the module which is part of the BA degree in Educational Studies.

Dr. Richardson said, "Whichever side of the fence one stands… Harry Potter is hard to ignore. The optional module has had to meet the same rigorous academic standards as any other and has the approval of the external examiner. It is only fitting that a universe such as Durham responds to the new developments in our academic and wider social and cultural environment to develop new modules such as this. Surely, higher education must explore issues relevant to today's society. Some of the universal themes covered in the world of J. K. Rowling certainly bear analysis, whether in English departments or outside."

Durham University is one of the first universities to open in England for more than 600 years, and is the third oldest educational institution in England behind Oxford and Cambridge. But there is no word yet if Durham will join the International Quidditch Association which has more 400 colleges and 300 high schools as members. Harry Potter is also being studied at Edinburgh, Yale, and Kansas State Universities.

The seventh installment of the movie franchise will hit theaters on November 19, 2010. You can also watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows online.

Early reviews of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have been leaked online following the test screenings held at the AMC River East in Chicago last Saturday afternoon. A handful of people were invited to the secret screen test without knowing first what movie will be shown until a few seconds before it started. Some of the people behind the film who graced the event include director David Yates, and producers David Heyman and David Barron.

The movie was said to have a current running time of about two hours and a half. It is still in its post production stage which is why there were some "imperfections" seen on the first part of the seventh installment of the Harry Potter franchise. Some of the CGI effects still looked unfinished like the green screens, cranes, and some of the equipments are visible in some points of the movie. They also used a temporary soundtrack because the full soundtrack by Alexander Desplat is still in recording stage.

People who got to watch the test screening then went online to post their comments, and mostly the film received positive reviews. One reader of Slash Film, Kyle, said, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is a great continuation of the series, thematically and visually in line with films 5 and 6." He had some issues with bthe film but despite these, he added, "As with those films, the cinematography is beautiful. There are several creative and dramatic shots throughout the film, so that even if one gets bored, you could just stare in awe with the scenery." He then gave the film four stars out of five.

Gaby, a MuggleNet reader, said, "This film felt very perfect. I don't remember feeling this satisfied with a Harry Potter movie since Chamber of Secrets. By this time, I mean that the experience of seeing this movie almost exactly mirrored my experience reading the book all those three years ago."

But the test screening is still not the final cut that will be released later this fall. Filmmakers hold test screenings in order to check the reactions of the viewers. They could then alter the film to address some of the issues before its theatrical release. The reviews given are not made by professionals and strict embargoes for them are applied until the final cut is shown.

The action adventure film which is based on the best-selling book by British author J. K. Rowling will hit theaters on November 19 but you can also watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows online.
