RIP Steve Prestwich: Drummer For Aussie Rock Legends ‘Cold Chisel’ Has Died

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:43 AM PST

Cold Chisel

Steve Prestwich, who was the drummer for Aussie rock legends Cold Chisel, has passed away at the age of 56. He was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, but was unable to regain consciousness following surgery.

Prestwich, originally born in England, moved to Australia in the 1970s and eventually joined forces with Jimmy Barnes, Don Walker, and Ian Moss to form Cold Chisel. The band was a major influence on the hard rock scene in Australia (and indeed, on Aussie culture in general), and are often seen as one of many bands that helped bring Aussie rock to the world stage.

Cold Chisel was formed in 1973, initially as an early metal group performing covers of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Using their metal and hard rock influences, the band evolved with their own original material - coming up with a sounds that many people identified with "Aussie Pub Rock" and songs that many find to be anthemic and synonymous to aspects of Australian culture [...]

Listen Now: ‘Theme from Jurassic Park’ Slowed Down

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:14 AM PST

Jurassic Park

There's no denying that the score for Jurassic Park from composer John Williams is absolutely amazing, especially the highly memorable piece, Theme from Jurassic Park.

Now, Sound Cloud user Birdfeeder has taken the classic track and slowed it down by 1,000 percent, and you can listen to it right here below.

It's well worth a listen, as it sounds wonderful, but note, the five-plus minute orchestral song is now over 42 minutes long [...]

Geek Gear: ‘Evil Dead’ Shirt ‘The Order Of The Hand That Went Bad’

Evil Dead - Order of the Hand That Went Bad

The $10 t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel is the Evil Dead-inspired "The Order Of The Hand That Went Bad."

The tee, by artist midgerock, went on sale at RIPT today, Sunday, January 16, 2011, at midnight CST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it's over, it will not be sold on the site anymore.

The design was inspired by the famous severed hand situation in Evil Dead II, and includes the chainsaw and shotgun used by the film's main character Ash in the Evil Dead film trilogy. Also, the words "Klaatu Barada Nikto" appear, which is a famous line from the third Evil Dead film, Army Of Darkness (which was taken from the original The Day The Earth Stood Still) [...]

CBS Renews ‘Big Bang Theory’ Through 2014

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 10:12 PM PST

Sheldon

CBS announced a deal to renew hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory for another three years through the 2013-14 television season.

The show, which stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Kaley Cuoco, has always been a hit with geeks for its witty, scientifically accurate dialog, and frequent references to pop culture. However, the last season has seen a huge ratings boost coupled with more media attention -- making a long-term renewal a no-brainer for the studio.

It also helps that 2010 was a particularly good year for Parsons, who's portrayal of Sheldon Cooper won not only a 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series but also a Golden Globe win this year for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series, Comedy or Musical.

If you've neglected to watch Big Bang Theory in the past, I completely understand as I've never been a fan of sitcoms and even less a fan of any program that features a laugh-track. [...]

68th Annual Golden Globe Awards: Who Won?

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 08:11 PM PST

The 68th annual Golden Globe awards ceremony was held tonight, and as always, we like to share with you the all of the big winners.

We know very few people even take the Globes seriously anymore, but if anything, it's a good way to get a loose feel at what direction the upcoming Academy Awards might go in. And surprisingly, this year's event was pretty entertaining. Host Ricky Gervais was hilarious yet again (he should really just host every year), and some deserving winners were crowned like Boardwalk Empire, Trent Reznor, and so on. Yes, there was a little too much Glee, but overall a decent show.

A bit of controversy did however arise at one point. It became apparent that Mr. Gervais had disappeared and had not returned in over an hour as Twitter collectively scratched its head. Then, as if nothing had happened, he returned! Quite strange.

You can see the entire list of winners by clicking on over to the other side. All winners have been bolded and starred! [...]

Craniumelody

Here at Geeks Of Doom, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of some of the great music that was released in 1986. It was a big year for music, notably the genre of metal, with major groundbreaking releases coming out from Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and much more.

Over the next few weeks, you'll be seeing some 1986 music flashback-related posts popping up here at Geeks of Doom, and to help keep the theme going, we decided to join forces with the Social Blend and get some tunes crankin' in the lead up to some of these upcoming posts.

Social Blend mainly focuses on news and stories posted at Mixx.com, but every couple of months we do a special music edition of the show called CRANIUMELODY. Essentially we try and select some obscure and underrated songs for people to check out, and other times we make selections based on a topic or theme for the show [...]
