Good Little Google Readers to Get Virtual Gold Stars

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 04:52 PM PDT

The world’s largest online search engine recently revealed its Google News Badge feature, a system through which readers can earn virtual badges based on their search and reading histories in the U.S. version of Google News. Someone searching for all the latest news on the NFL lockouts, for example, could earn a football badge.

The mobile app marketplace is exploding; there are now hundreds of thousands of apps on the iOS, Android and BlackBerry app markets. Heck, even Windows Phone 7 just crossed the 10,000 mark!

But alas, not all apps are created equal; some are way, way better than others. Which leads me to today’s Ask DLS question: What is your favorite mobile app at the moment?

We don’t necessarily mean the latest craze; we’d like to hear about apps that have stood the test of time on your device, apps that are among the first you install on a new smartphones, apps that have earned their place on your home screen and in your heart.

So, what are some of these apps? Bonus points for links to screenshots in the comments!

OS X 10.7 Lion Ditches the Disk, Offers Cloud-Only Recovery

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:52 PM PDT

Both of the new Macs that Apple shipped today come with the latest version of OS X: 10.7 Lion. The update brings many new features, as you’d expect of a new operating system, but there are some fundamental changes both to the user experience itself, and the way Apple has chosen to deliver the new [...]

Amazon Now Offers Textbook Rentals

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 10:52 AM PDT

When I was a poor college student, I learned buying textbooks was a big part of my expenses.  I would always buy used books whenever I could, and I would sell them back to the bookstore if they weren’t one of my chemistry books.  Owners of the Amazon Kindle or reading apps are able to [...]

ChevronWP7 Labs to unlock your Windows Phone 7 handset for $9, hackers not welcome

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 08:52 AM PDT

Need a little extra unlocked WP7 incentive to keep you from buying those oh-so-distracting iOS and Android devices? Well, that official homebrew love is going to cost you — $9 to be exact. We already knew the Microsoft-sanctioned ChevronWP7 Labs would be open for business soon, but recent tweets from the jailbreaking outfit’s Chris Walsh have shed a little more light on the process. In addition to the nominal fee users will have to fork over for the official unlock, Walsh also points out that software updates to Mango and Nodo will close any security holes in the platform. So, if you were planning on getting your pirate-y hands dirty hacking away at WP7, think again — Microsoft’s still got the keys to its mobile OS’ house.

Apple Mac OS X Lion available now in the App Store

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 06:52 AM PDT

For ‘developers’ willing to shell out $99 for an annual membership in Apple’s group of Mac OS app creators, Lion is old news already. But the rest of you can finally download Apple’s latest operating system — Mac OS 10.7 — by hitting up the App Store on your Snow Leopard (10.6.8)-equipped Mac, assuming it’s powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, i5 or i7 processor. From our experience with the pre-release version, the 4GB download could take over an hour, even on a high-speed connection, but once you have the installer in hand the upgrade process itself should be complete in about 20 minutes. We’ll be posting a full review of Lion later this week, but you can check out our hands-on preview for a sneak peek at Apple’s latest consumer OS in the meantime.

Samsung Patent Creates Shallow Depth-of-Field in Digicams

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 04:52 AM PDT

With their tiny lenses and even tinier sensors, will cellphone cameras ever be able to take photos as good as those from SLRs and Micro Four Thirds cameras? The quality has all but been taken care of with the latest phone-cams, but there’s one problem common to all point-and-shoots: Their tremendous depth-of-field. A patent from [...]

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 02:52 AM PDT

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Kleiner Perkins Doubles Down On FindTheBest

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:52 AM PDT

Santa Barbara and New York based FindTheBest has nearly doubled in size since February, so it’s no wonder Kleiner Perkins is putting another bet down on the company. They invested $2 million last December. And now they’ve invested $4 million more. I’ve been a fan of the company since I first heard about it. It’s a very useful comparison engine for large data sets (see ski resorts or nutritional supplements or colleges, for example).

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.
