‘Star Trek’ Creator Gene Roddenberry’s Production Company To Deliver First–Ever 360–Degree Movie With ‘White Room: 02B3′ Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:06 PM PDT Gene Roddenberry is a name synonymous with science fiction. The former Los Angeles police officer is responsible for creating one of the biggest sci–fi franchises known to mankind, Star Trek, which continues to thrive to this very day, well over four decades after its initial premiere. Roddenberry created many other things in his life along with Star Trek, but he also started a production company called Roddenberry Entertainment, which to this day strives to find revolutionary ways to bring science fiction to the masses. In keeping with that goal, today it was announced that Roddenberry Entertainment will be teaming up with technology lab Social Animal to create the first–ever 360° film titled White Room: 02B3. The movie will see six strangers forced to take part in an experiment that could change the face of humanity as we know it. Music Review: Captain America: The First Avenger Soundtrack Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:48 PM PDT Captain America: The First Avenger Soundtrack CD | MP3 Alan Silvestri Walt Disney Records Release Date: July 19, 2011 This summer movie season has brought us the now customary overpowering glut of blockbuster superhero epics, and with them some interesting but ultimately unmemorable orchestral scores. It's disappointing when esteemed composers like Patrick Doyle and James Newton Howard are put to work on movies such as Thor and Green Lantern and they can't even be moved to create good music for them. Neither musical score packed even the slightest amount of the mystery, tension, and high adventure all classic action-movie scores bring to their accompanying films, although to be fair Doyle's Thor soundtrack had its share of moments worthy of the God of Thunder. If the music doesn't care about the characters and the on-screen action, then why should we? Most composers tend to fall back on the same musical motifs that do little to stand out as nothing more than the components of a standard soundtrack. It all sounds nice, but you won't be humming the themes for hours or days after you see the movie or purchase the soundtrack CD [...]

Disney Adds Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper & Dwight Yoakam To ‘The Lone Ranger’ Cast Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:39 PM PDT It's being reported that Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, and Dwight Yoakam are all in talks to join Walt Disney's revival of The Lone Ranger. The trio join stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer on the project, as well as director Gore Verbinski, who of course directed Depp in the first Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and the recently released Rango. Depp is playing the role of Tonto, while The Social Network star, Hammer, will be playing the title character, who's attacked and left for dead by a ruthless gang before putting on the mask and becoming the Ranger. Yoakam would be playing the leader of said gang, while Bonham Carter would be the Madame of a brothel and Pepper an officer in the military. [...]

Universal Decides NOT To Take On Ron Howard’s Massive Adaptation Of Stephen King’s ‘Dark Tower’ Posted: 19 Jul 2011 04:41 PM PDT Back in September of 2010, a gigantic piece of news came along: director Ron Howard, his Imagine Entertainment partner, Brian Grazer, and writer Akiva Goldsman were developing an absolutely astonishing three–film, two–season TV series combo package based on Stephen King's seven–book series, The Dark Tower. The announcement was unheard of, and Howard and his team had a deal in place with Universal Pictures and NBC Universal that would give him the freedom to film most of it together, much like Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings...meaning the studio had to have the ultimate confidence in the project. The plan was for Goldsman to write the first film's script and the first season of the TV show, with Howard directing. The first movie was to be followed by the first season of the TV series—which would fill in many of the story details and bridge the first and second movies—and then the second movie would be followed by a prequel season of the TV series before the final film hit. They even had Javier Bardem attached to star in the movies and first season of the show. [...]

Watch Now: Red Band ‘Conan the Barbarian’ Clip Posted: 19 Jul 2011 02:11 PM PDT Lionsgate has just released a new red band clip from their upcoming Conan the Barbarian 3D. You can watch the new clip here below. It's a 3-minute clip showing young Conan kicking serious ass after being ambushed by enemies of his people in a snowy forest. It's a damn good scene loaded with plenty of spilled blood, severed heads, and broken bones. I can certainly get behind some quality carnage any day so this was a nice little surprise to wake up to. But the scene starts off strangely with Kid Conan (Hey there's a potential franchise), played by Leo Howard, and some of the other kids in his village having to run through the forest and up some hills while carrying eggs in their mouths. Seriously. Is this how Cimmerians are trained for battle? Ron Perlman is in this clip giving the speech that can be heard in the trailers about when a Cimmerian feels thirst it's for blood and when he feels cold it's the cold edge of steel and yada yada yada, but I'm trying to figure out how eggs fit into the equation. At least the egg bit has a nice payoff at the end of the scene [...]

Geek Deal: Duela Dent as The Joker Statue Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:54 AM PDT Normally, this is where I would link a great comic book deal from Thwipster, but in this case I'll be linking a great statue deal from the company. You see, Thwipster's Tuesday comic book deal was the first volume of Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá's Casanova: Luxuria, but within an hour and a half the 46 percent off trade paperback was sold out! There is however a great deal now on an awesome DC Direct PVC statue in the Ame-Comi line. Duela Dent as The Joker is one of the newer statues in the line, but it's received a lot of praise. The statue stands at 9.5 inches tall, and features Two-Face's daughter as a steampunk version of The Joker. The standard retail price is $70.00, but only at Thwipster, and only for Tuesday can you find it for a mere $36.99, which is 47% off for those of you who aren't math majors [...]
