Comic Review: Queen Crab

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Queen Crab
Written by Jimmy Palmiotti
Art by Artiz Eiguren
Image Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $12.99

Queen Crab is insane on every possible level. I still can't figure out if Jimmy Palmiotti is crazy for writing this book or if Image is even crazier for publishing it. Queen Crab has essentially no mainstream appeal. This is the kind of comic you would find in an art house publisher's catalogue. There is very little violence and a storyline so bizarre, David Cronenberg would hesitate before adapting it to film. But regardless of the madness that this book packs, Queen Crab is a great piece of character work. Palmiotti has a real talent for crafting believable characters that live in the same dark and dismal world that we all must endure. Do not expect to find heroes in capes or anything blood soaked and action packed with this one. Instead, anticipate a deeply personal character study with one bat shit crazy twist [...]

Broken Lizard Says ‘Super Troopers 2′ Script Is Done

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Super Troopers

Fans of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe and their movies have a special place in their hearts for the group's first successful flick, Super Troopers, which tells the story of a department of Vermont state police who tend to not take their work too seriously and are facing losing their jobs if the state decides to shut them down and let the local police department handle things.

Whether you like Broken Lizard's movies or not, none of the movies that have followed Super Troopers have come nearly as close to being as lastingly quotable and hilarious as that movie is to this day. [...]

Check Out These Six Character Posters From ‘The Avengers’

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 04:00 PM PDT

The Avengers

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios have released six character posters to promote their upcoming superhero team-up blockbuster The Avengers. You can check them all out here below.

Most of them look very much like they appeared on the recently released movie poster but at least Captain America and Thor aren't striking goofy poses anymore. Would have been nice to finally get Iron Man's helmet back on, but what can you do? [...]

Cover by Jenny Frison

Release Date: March 14, 2012

This month we get to see Zoey Redbird complete her initiation into the five elements in House Of Night #5. Her lesson for the last element, spirit, is one that holds a lot of meaning for her. Not everyone is able to survive the change from human to vampyre, and it takes four years of training to do so. We learn that the stress on their bodies and minds can take a toll.

Zoey spends this issue coming to terms with a choice she made prior to her training at the House of Night. Having imprinted on someone from her past, it seems only fitting that the story of Hippolyte and Herakles contained the same problem. Learning from the mistakes of vampyres past has aided Zoey several times and this is no exception [...]

Ron Howard Finds New Home For Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 02:00 PM PDT

The Dark Tower

It was one of the most ambitious plans ever concocted in the within the realms of entertainment: a trilogy of movies surrounding two seasons of a TV show, all based on author Stephen King's popular book series, The Dark Tower.

The project had Ron Howard set to direct and Akiva Goldsman set to write the first movie and first season of the show---which would fill in story details and bridge the first two movies---and Oscar winner Javier Bardem attached to star in all three movies and the first season of the TV show (the second season being a prequel that would require a younger actor). Conan 2

Conan The Barbarian #2
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Becky Cloonan
Colors by Dave Stewart
Letters by Richard Starkings and Comicraft
Cover by Massino Carnevale
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $3.50

Conan The Barbarian #2 is a true gem. One of those comics that will have a Conan fan cheering out loud by the end of the book. The problem is, I don't know how well readers who aren't familiar with Conan will take it.

Writer Brian Wood takes a classic Robert E. Howard story with almost no dialogue and crafts a fantastic comic...with almost no dialogue. And that's fine. There's not much that needs to be said in this story, and what dialogue there is, is meaningful [...]

Watch Now: New ‘Battleship’ Trailer Promises Massive Destruction and Mindless Fun

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 12:02 PM PDT

Battleship Banner

Yet another new trailer for Universal Pictures' sea-going alien invasion extravaganza Battleship has hit the web boasting more large-scale mayhem and extraterrestrial menaces that vaguely resemble Master Chief to make the last Transformers movie look like a German indie film.

You can watch the video here below.

Just about every CG-enhanced money shot in Peter Berg's board game-based sci-fi adventure has been crammed into these headache-inducing two minutes. The movie's release is two months away so at this point anyone interested in seeing it has already made up their mind. Battleship looks like decent summer entertainment, nothing more [...]

Comic Review: Saga #1

Saga 1

Saga #1

Written by Brian K. Vaughan
Art by Fiona Staples
Letters & Design by Fonografiks
Coordinated by Eric Stephenson
Cover by Fiona Staples
Image Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Saga #1 is the kind of comic that comes along once in a great while. What comes with it is that the feeling that your "on to something." Remember what it felt like reading that first issue of Y:The Last Man? That first issue of Batman: The Long Halloween? That first issue of Spider-Man: Chapter One (am I alone here?)? What Saga #1 it DID NOT feel like, is the "Star Wars meets Game of Thrones" experience that the solicitation copy had led me to believe that I was in for.

Brian K. Vaughan, writer of comics like Y: The Last Man and Marvel's Runaways, comes back to comics with.... Star Wars meets Game of Thrones? I'm sure he didn't write the solicitation copy, but I strongly dislike that sales tactic. This book is NOT like Star Wars. This book is NOT like Game of Thrones. What it IS, is a fantastic story that combines many standard genres into one great comic! [...]

Watch Now: Someone Made A Flying ‘Back To The Future’ DeLorean

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Flying DeLorean

Ever wanted to see a real DeLorean flying through the air before it zips off through space and time to another decade, century, or millennia, just as it did at the end of Back to the Future and in Back to the Future II?

Well, that's probably difficult to pull off with a full-sized DeLorean considering we don't yet have the flying car sci-fi movies have promised us, but it's not stopping folks from making a scale model of the car and taking to the skies. [...]

Comic Review: Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2

Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2

Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2
Written by Ken Janssens
Art by Matthew Martin
Colors by Vladimir Popov
Letters by Bernie Lee
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

I have long been a fan of all things Holmesian, even the ridiculously overzealous films of the last few years. I've read everything I could get my hands on for decades and comics are no exception. It seems like Bluewater Comics is trying to build a library of literary figures and who better to add to that collection than the world famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2 drops us into the plot right after Angela Farrell, a local "working girl" has been murdered. Much action ensues... We have a royal carriage being vandalized by local anti-monarchists, which turns out to be less than what it appears. Even the death of the prostitute is not what it seems. The twisting plot is definitely an homage to the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle [...]

‘The Avengers’ Director Joss Whedon Still Has Hope For More ‘Firefly’

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Firefly

It's sad and quite depressing to think that it's already been almost ten years since Firefly came and went before anyone really knew what it was or how cherished it would become.

For those of you who still hold on to hope that FOX will finally give it that second chance we see being given more and more often these days (it's shocking that they haven't already knowing the fanbase Firefly now has in comparison to one of their new and untested shows with no fanbase), or that they'll allow someone else to give it another chance (Netflix has become a popular option), know that you're not alone.
