Netflix Review: Star Trek – The Original Series (Remastered Edition) Posted: 12 May 2012 06:16 PM PDT Star Trek - The Original Series Remastered Edition Netflix Streaming DVD | Blu-ray Created by Gene Roddenberry Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Grace Lee Whitney, Majel Barrett, Jeffrey Hunter, Roger C. Carmel, Ricardo Montalban, Joan Collins, Robert Lansing, Terri Garr, Kim Darby, James Daly Paramount Originally Broadcast: September 08, 1966 Several weeks ago, I reviewed the first couple of seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation for our Netflix Review feature here at Geeks Of Doom. I had an enjoyable time delving into some nostalgia that I decided to take a step back further and dive into the original series of Star Trek, complete with the remastering and updated visual effects throughout all three seasons, encompassing the good (classic memorable episodes), the bad (Spock's Brain and Season Three), and the Ugly (Space Hippies). Commencing in 1966, Gene Roddenberry's creation would eventually become a franchise revered and followed by millions of fans worldwide. Despite this, the history of the original series would become affected by budgetary constraints and poor ratings in archaic scales, limiting the primary voyages of the USS Enterprise to three seasons only. As is prevalently known, Star Trek follows the voyages of the Enterprise, on its peaceful mission of exploration into unknown areas of the galaxy – attempting to meet and contact new civilizations, and represent the interests of the Federation. Lead by Captain Kirk (William Shatner), and accompanied by First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) among many others, the team aboard the starship would become known in-universe as legendary historical figures trailblazing their way into the unknown – and create such an element of veneration associated with the ship that the name Enterprise would be assigned to the Federation's future flag ships [...] |
Social Blend Podcast: Episode #200 Is Here! Posted: 12 May 2012 05:07 PM PDT Behold, rambunctious geeks of the Internet, a new milestone of independent news media has just been reached. This week, the Social Blend arrives at episode 200!! What does that mean? Well if you aren't already excited, then for shame. And if you've never listened to Social Blend, then #200 is a good round number for you to start. I remember the early days of the show, with a much younger Jay Fowler (aka SilentJay74) and a much more Australian-ian Greg Davies (aka cGt2099). It was good times that always kept me entertained within an hour (unlike those bastards over at The Drill Down... which, as a former host, is mostly my fault. heh). SB has had tons of awesome guests over the years, including G4TV's Chris Gore, Badass author Ben Thompson, Star Wars' official social media chick Bonnie Burton, Nataly Dawn from the awesome band Pomplamoose, and the firey metalhead from Roadrunner Records known as Jeremy Rosen, as well as regular guests such as myself [...] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Henchman 21′s Cooking Corner: Skullkickers Stew Posted: 12 May 2012 12:50 PM PDT I'm always on the lookout for new recipes to try and I came across one recently that ties into one of my favorite new comics, Skullkickers. The Skullkickers crew proudly gives us the recipe for Skullkickers Stew & Dungeon Dumplings. Check it out here. It sounds like a thick and hearty recipe, with plenty of meat and veggies. And even if you don't feel like partaking of this particular dish, reading the recipe is funny enough on its own, and is also a good indication of what the series is all about. If you haven't read Skullkickers yet, I recommend it. It's a funny take on the fantasy genre featuring two mercenaries, a human and a dwarf, and all the misadventures that they get into. The series features hilarious dialog from Jim Zub and some great art from Edwin Huang. The art and color on the series make the series feel like an animated TV series. Skullkickers #13 came out last month and is a great jumping-on point as the boys take to the high seas. The issue's recap page will give you all the information you need, although you'll want to read the whole series at some point because it's just too much fun [...] |
‘Pink Floyd: The Story of Wish You Were Here’ Coming To DVD Posted: 12 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT Pink Floyd: The Story of Wish You Were Here, a documentary about rock group Pink Floyd's memorable album Wish You Were Here, is getting a DVD and Blu-ray release on June 26th from Eagle Rock Entertainment. The album, which was their follow up to their enormously successful 1973 Dark Side of the Moon, is almost as revered by fans of the group as Dark Side is. Originally released in September 1975 and going to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and around the world, Wish You Were Here explores themes similar to Dark Side -- alienation, confusion, longing, mental breakdown, and also even dissension in the music business. It's also a tribute of sorts to one of their founding members, the late Syd Barrett, who had left the band a few years earlier, due to mental illness. The long track "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is a recorded nod to their fallen member, who had also made a few unannounced appearances in the studio when they were recording the album. That track opens and closes the record [...] |
Square Enix Announces ‘Hitman: Absolution’ Pre-Order Bonus In ‘Hitman: Sniper Challenge’ Posted: 12 May 2012 10:02 AM PDT When it comes to video games, usually companies will offer little pre-order bonuses in hopes that potential consumers will secure their copy early. These bonuses typically consist of a special weapon to use in combat, or perhaps a special suit of armor or outfit for your character to strut around in. Other times you'll see DLC offered or a collectible usually reserved for special editions of a game, but Square Enix is doing something pretty darn cool for the upcoming fifth installment in the Hitman franchise, titled Hitman: Absolution. For those who head over to GameStop and pre-order the game starting on May 15th, you'll be given a standalone game titled Hitman: Sniper Challenge. [...] |
