Comic Review: Star Trek #9

Star Trek 9

Star Trek #9
Written by Mike Johnson
Art by Stephen Molnar
Colors by John Raunch
Letters by Neil Uyetake
Based on the original teleplay "The Return of the Archons" by Boris Sobelman
Creative Consultant: Roberto Orci
IDW Publishing Release Date: May 30, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99

In Star Trek #9, Sulu takes the spotlight as the crew fights a very strange battle against what appears to be a group of medieval villagers. I'm sure that's all they are. Just some peaceful people minding their own business, right? What could go wrong?

I've gotta tell you, this book is so much FUN!!! Writer Mike Johnson does a great job of taking an old story and updating it to fit into the current Star Trek continuity. Let's be honest, these stories were all written in the late 1960s and while some aspects can be horribly out-dated or "hokey," Johnson turns them around and makes them new and fresh and exciting. Plus, there's the added bonus that this is set in the Star Trek movie "universe," so at this point, anything can happen. Yes, you know none of the crew will to die, but still, there's an excitement that Johnson puts into the book that gives you that "anything goes" feeling. Also, he gives us some great flashbacks and insights into the characters lives that we don't get in the movies [...]

Ashley Tisdale Set To Lead Slasher Parody Pic ‘Scary Movie 5′

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 07:15 PM PDT

Ashley Tisdale The tagline said that Scary Movie 4 was the fourth and final film of the trilogy – that was not a typo, it's literally on the poster – but we all know that it wasn't going to end at number four. Although she was a fixture in all four of the Scary Movie films, Anna Faris won't be returning to make jokes about pop culture and hit scary movies. Instead the people behind the movie are opting for a new face that could possibly take this film further. Coming Soon has word that High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale will be the star to lead Scary Movie 5. Undercover Brother and Roll Bounce director Malcolm Lee will be helming Scary Movie 5, which is said to be a parody of Black Swan. Although I am not a fan of any of the films in the Scary Movie franchise, it did help launch Faris' career, so maybe, just maybe, it can do the same for Tisdale's post-High School Musical career.

Kaboom!: Garfield #2 cover

Garfield #2
Written by Mark Evanier
Art by Gary Barker & Dan Davis
Colors by Lisa Moore
Letters by Steve Wands
Garfield created by Jim Davis
Covers by Gary Barker & Jim Davis
Kaboom!
Release Date: June 6, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

When reading Garfield #2, it's obvious that this isn't just another younger readers book. Sure, it'll appeal to kids, but I got just as much enjoyment out of it as anyone else would.

First off, Mark Evanier wrote for the Garfield Saturday morning cartoons in the '80s. So, it's clear to see that he has a fondness for the character and that he KNOWS how to write Garfield, as well as the rest of the cast. Let's be honest, Garfield is a 3-panel comic strip (more on Sundays) and all that anyone remembers about him is that he loves lasagna, hates Mondays, and is lazy. In this comic, Evanier actually gives him some CHARACTER that totally fits in with everything we've ever known about him in the past, and yet, makes him a character that we're just getting to know. As far as the actual stories go in this issue, it's classic Garfield and some very fun stuff [...]

Could ‘Days of Future Past’ Be The Plot For Untitled ‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel?

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 05:33 PM PDT

X-Men: First Class

The X-Men film franchise has explored the past and the present, but never the future. Time travel is a very familiar theme that is explored in the X-Men comics, but it was one that was never explored in the X-Men films, until now. When we reported that the sequel to the Untitled X-Men: First Class sequel would be released in 2014, we didn't know anything about the project, except that Matthew Vaughn is expected to begin shooting the sequel in January, but now we might know what the film could contain.

AICN has word that 20th Century Fox has register the title Days of Future Past with the MPAA. Fans of both the comic book and the 90s animated series will be familiar with this title as it was one of the best storylines in the Marvel Universe. Although I am most familiar with the animated incarnation – Bishop goes back in time to prevent Senator Kelly from being assassinated – the comic version is slightly different [...]

Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Working On A ‘Black Panther’ Movie

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 04:50 PM PDT

Black Panther

Marvel Studios has scheduled most of their films for the next two years. Iron Man 3 will open in theaters in May 2013 and Thor 2 is scheduled for a November 2013 release. Surprisingly, Marvel had scheduled the sequel to Captain America for a April 2014 release. All this leaves is the Marvel Mystery Movie that is opening May 2014. Though it was unlikely that it would have been Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie, many thought that the Guardians of the Galaxy would be scheduled for a May 2014 release.

Nothing is confirmed as of yet, but Latino Review has reported that the prince of Wakanda, T'Challa, better known as The Black Panther, will have his own Marvel movie that is slated for an eventual release in the next few years [...]

Ridley Scott Could Direct The Biblical Story Of Moses After ‘The Counselor’

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott is showing no intention that he is retiring. The acclaimed director will be following the highly anticipated Prometheus with the law-based drama titled The Counselor. And as soon as he completes that, he will be moving on to one of many scripts that have been offered to him, one of them being a telling of the biblical story of Moses.

In an interview with Esquire (via The Playlist), the director revealed that he is now attached to direct a movie simply titled Moses. Not much is known about how this story of Moses will be approached, but apparently the project was suppose to remain under the radar for quite some time [...]

Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth Join Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Noah’

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Logan Lerman

A few more names are climbing aboard Darren Aronofsky's Noah. Russell Crowe has already signed on to play as the titular character and Saorise Ronan and Jennifer Connelly are in for unknown roles, possibly as characters closely related to Noah. It is rumored that Connelly will play Noah's wife. Now Deadline is reporting that Logan Lerman (Awake) and Douglas Booth (upcoming Romeo and Juliet) are signed up to play as Noah's sons.

According to the report, Booth will play the younger son Shem, while Lerman will play as the elder sibling Ham. While we have confirmed a few more characters for Aronofsky's biblical movie, we still don't know what Ronan's part is in all of this. The site says that there is a role for a love interest for Noah's oldest son in the film, so there is a possibility that she could fulfill that role [...]

What’s Next For Christopher Nolan After ‘The Dark Knight Rises’?

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 01:06 PM PDT

Christopher Nolan

The epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's legend of Batman comes an end in July with The Dark Knight Rises, but once that is behind him, the acclaimed director is setting his sights on some possible projects, and it could be another take on a franchise character. He also says that he will no longer pursue directing an iconic figure in history.

Empire spoke to Nolan who said that he will no longer work towards directing making a Howard Hughes film, saying that Bruce Wayne became his Hughes film. In a way Nolan's Batman franchise is a lot like the Hughes project he was looking forward to directing. Both were wealthy and quirky characters who started out as an orphan at a very young age [...]

E3 2012: ‘Heavy Rain’ Creator Quantic Dream Announces ‘Beyond: Two Souls’ With Ellen Page

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 12:17 PM PDT

Beyond: Two Souls

The highly anticipated new game from Heavy Rain creator Quantic Dream was announced at E3, and it will be called Beyond: Two Souls.

Unlike Heavy Rain, the new game doesn't involve you interacting with everything around you, and instead focuses more on action and story. It tells a supernatural story that spans fifteen years. You play as Jodie Holmes, who has some kind of bond with an unseen spiritual being who helps her on her journey and protects her from the many dangerous people who are after her. [...]

MTV Adapting ‘Scream’ Franchise Into A Televised Series

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Ghostface

Having already adapted the 1980s film Teen Wolf into a successful TV series, MTV is now setting their sights on another popular movie, or movie franchise to be more precise. According to the TVLine, MTV will now be turning the Scream film franchise into a televised series. The report does not mention if Scream creator Wes Craven will be a part of the creative process, but one would hope he would be brought in at least to consult on the series itself.

Each and every one of the Scream movies had Neve Campbell's character Sidney Prescott being attacked by different killers wearing the same hooded Ghostface mask. And each and every one of those films brought the elements of the horror genre past and present into real life world. It's not known if MTV will follow the same formula used in the films or even if they will use the same characters, but based on how many horror films are out there and how many will come to pass, there's a lot of material that MTV could use as inspiration for a couple of episodes. Just don't expect Emmy-nominated material, in fact, think more along the lines of the Teen Choice Awards [...]

Rocketeer Adventures reminds me why I love comics. And why I'll always love the traditional comic medium. No, I'm not one of those who hates digital. I have MORE than plenty of digital comics on my computer and 100% of the books that I review are sent to me via computer. But there's something about holding a comic book in your hands. You get totally lost in the story and in the book itself. Cheers to IDW for putting together another fantastic issue of this series.

The first story in Rocketeer Adventures, Vol. 2 #3 is written by David Lapham with art by Chris Sprouse. It's a great truth or dare type of story that really speaks to ANYONE reading it. The underlying message in the book is universal and applies to the audience. We can all find a piece of ourselves in this fantastic short story. It reads light, with no heavy moral issue, but when you get to the end, there's a great "ah-ha" moment that will make you want to read it again. This is, by far, my favorite story in the issue [...]

TV Review: Game Of Thrones 2.10: Valar Morghulis

Game of Thrones Review

Game of Thrones
Season Two, Episode 10 – Valar Morghulis
Directed by Alan Taylor
Written by David Benioff & D.B. Weiss
Starring Mark Addy, Alfie Allen, Emilia Clarke, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Stephen Dillane, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Iain Glen, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Conleth Hill, Carice van Houten, Harry Lloyd, Richard Madden, Patrick Malahide, Rory McCann, Sophie Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, and Issac Hempstead-Wright

When I reviewed the Season 1 finale of Game of Thrones, I felt that episode played more like the first episode of the second season, more than it felt like a closer. There were too many hanging plots, with few elements drawing to a close. In retrospect, part of that feeling may have come from the fact that I truly felt that Ned Starks' death would have been an amazing way to end the season, but I understand wanting to provide some sense of finality to that first season and Ned's death would not have been the way to accomplish that goal.

After "Blackwater" last week, I was concerned that the show might pull the same trick twice (considering the ending structure for both Season 1 and Season 2 played out in a similar fashion - huge, event, water-cooler worthy penultimate episode, followed by a slower, picking up the pieces episode to close out the season). However, I was glad to see the show draw some of the various plots to pause, rather than an end [...]
