Neil Gaiman The Day The Saucers Came Threadless Comics-On Tees Vol. 6

Back in April, Threadless challenged readers to design the first t-shirt in a new volume of Comics-On Tees based on The Day The Saucers Came, a story written by Neil Gaiman. Of course, being as you're a faithful Geeks of Doom reader, you know Gaiman as the author of The Sandman, Stardust, and Coraline.

Estudio Verso's t-shirt design was chosen and will be sold on Threadless as part of Comics-On Tees Vol. 6, and 25% of the sale of each tee will go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

The Day The Saucers Came has everything a great story should: zombies, aliens, and blood-thirsty giants stomping across the land. Below is the text (written by Gaiman) that's printed on the first tee [...]

The Hunger Games

Lionsgate is not wasting any time when it comes to The Hunger Games, their franchise based on the series of books by author Suzanne Collins.

After the first movie blasted into theaters and threw down huge numbers, we found out that the studio was hiring Francis Lawrence to direct its sequel, Catching Fire, because the first movie's director, Gary Ross, didn't feel he would have enough time to prepare, develop, and actually make the sequel by the planned November 22, 2013 release date. The Evolution Of Batman In Popular Culture

Batman in Popular Culture

Batman has become one of, if not the most well known characters in the history of American pop culture. He's been dark, he's been bright, and he's even been an agent of propaganda, but one thing that has remained consistent is that people know who Batman is. With The Evolution of Batman in Popular Culture, my attempt is to take an extensive look at all the ways that Batman can be interpreted, why he's remained a consistent force in popular culture, and how he becomes a reflection of society making him the most iconic superhero.

When Batman (Bat-Man) was created by Bill Finger and Robert Kane, he was initially created as an answer to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's iconic superhero of the lower class. And while Superman was given super powers and a fighting stance against corruption, Batman was a little darker. The creation of Batman came mainly from pulp novels, Zorro, and the 1926 horror film The Bat. Batman was a weird creature of the night that, initially, wasn't afraid to kill and would do so if the criminal "deserved" it. In his creation, Batman is already a reflection of an era that is commonly described as being hopeful, yet disillusioned in the face of World War II, a time when almost everyone was on board with the Allied Powers in their war against the Evil Axis Powers. Society was cut and dry, good and bad, so a four-color look at a wealthy vigilante lent itself perfectly to the culture of the time [...]

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Hey there comics fans!

Sure, we know, San Diego Comic-Con is over and done with, but that doesn't mean you can't still have fun with comics and comic-related things! Heck, no! In fact, if you're needing your comics high to keep going and growing throughout the week, then have we got your prescription! On this episode of Comics of Doom, Hunter takes a seat with Matt Hawkins, Top Cow president and writer of the upcoming series Think Tank, to discuss his day-to-day work, as well as his comic. Now, this isn't all that they talk about by any means, in fact, Matt takes Hunter to school for about thirty minutes when he talks all about the modern marvels of science and how they influenced Think Tank.

The comic looks really cool, and I hope you guys give this a listen because I think anyone who's into science and stuff will have a great time!

Amanda Plummer Joins The Cast Of ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

Amanda Plummer

The list of remaining roles in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is slowly being crossed off. With Jean Malone playing Joanna Mason and Philip Seymour Hoffman signed on to play Plutarch, director Francis Lawrence still has some major roles to cast for the anticipated sequel.

Lionsgate has confirmed that Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction) has signed on for the role of Wiress. According to the press release, the character's eccentricity earns her the nickname "Nuts" from fellow tributes, and though she doesn't communicate traditionally, her observations and contributions prove invaluable in the Quarter Quell [...]

Andrew Stanton To Direct ‘Finding Nemo 2′

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Finding Nemo

Finding a story to tell for a possible Finding Nemo sequel is quite difficult, but you can bet that Pixar is working on bringing audiences back into Australian waters and reintroducing us to Marlin, Nemo, Dory, Crush, and Bruce.

Deadline reports that Finding Nemo director Andrew Station has found that a story to tell, that the studio loves the idea, and that he'll be back to direct the sequel. The director is one of the most recognizable people on the Pixar staff, having served as executive producer for a number of Pixar films, as well as the director for Finding Nemo and Wall-E. The former film earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture and is currently Pixar's second highest grossing movie [...]

Johnny Depp Confirmed For Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’

Johnny Depp Joins Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel

If there was one word that could describe director Wes Anderson's dream cast wish list for his next project, The Grand Budapest Hotel, it would be ambitious.

The list of names on the cast sheet included Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, and Angela Lansbury. Though Murray, Norton, Goldblum, Brody, Wilson, and Dafoe are names that often appear in an Anderson film, this would be the first time for Depp, Law, and Lansbury. [...]

‘Punisher’ Star Thomas Jane Becomes Frank Castle Again For His Own Fan Film ‘Dirty Laundry’

Thomas Jane as The Punisher

Not a whole lot of people were fans of the 2004 comic book adaptation The Punisher---though there are plenty who do consider it a guilty pleasure---despite its high amount of violence and badge of honor R rating. The movie starred Thomas Jane as the Punisher himself, Frank Castle, and as it turns out, Jane is just a fan like you or I. And just like many fans do, Jane decided he wanted to make his own Punisher fan film, which he went ahead and did.

The result is a 10-minute short fan film titled Dirty Laundry, which sees Castle, living out of a van, trying to go about his day without getting involved in the very bad things going on in the very bad neighborhood he's in. But, of course, things can only go so far. [...]

SDCC 2012: Marvels Iron Man 3 booth

Here's a bunch of swanky photos I snapped of Marvel's Iron Man 3 booth on the SDCC show floor, including a snazzy, hastily thrown-together composite so that you can see all iterations of the Iron Man suit in one handy image.

SDCC 2012: Photos from the Convention floor

In truth this is more a photo catalogue of things I want than anything else. For instance, the Bender's Big Score print from Acme Archives, a custom painted guitar from ESP like the guys at the Monsterverse booth, all the lightsaber lamps from Museum Replicas, life-sized trolls from Weta Workshop for my front lawn, an entire footlocker full of The Walking Dad zombie "Army Men," and to be trained in the art of making awesome comics by the legendary Stan Sakai, creator of Usagi Yojimbo.

And if anyone wants to gift me the Galactus maquette from Sideshow Collectables I wouldn't mind. I swear.

Thus begins my covetous photologue. Enjoy! [...]

Peter Jackson Once Again Considering Expanding ‘The Hobbit’ Into A Trilogy?

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

The Hobbit

Despite just being one book, The Hobbit is being extended to two films: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. This will allow director Peter Jackson to tell a more expansive and detailed story. But during the San Diego Comic-Con, reports of the film expanding to three films started to surface. This, of course, trickled down to everyone's Twitter feed, and a variety of sources drilled Jackson during a press conference.

Jackson acknowledged that there were talks of turning The Hobbit into three films, but with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey being released this year, the film split would probably occur at The Hobbit: There and Back Again. [...]

SDCC 2012: New Cinematic Clip From Naughty Dog’s ‘The Last Of Us’

The Last of Us

A brand new clip from the highly anticipated new game from the company behind the amazing Uncharted video game franchise, The Last of Us, was released at this year's Comic-Con.

The clip doesn't show off the exciting gameplay we saw at the recent E3 convention, but does show a cinematic involving the main character you play as, the teenage companion you're making your way through the devastation of the apocalypse with, and a new character who may owe you a big favor. [...]
