First Poster For Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ Posted: 22 Aug 2012 07:00 PM PDT Sometimes there's brilliance in simplicity, and that's what Disney and DreamWorks seem to be aiming for with their new poster for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. To make the poster even more simplistic it has no tag line and it's black and white. It just features President Lincoln in a pensive state of mind once again, much like the first image we saw a couple of weeks back. [...] |
Comic Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 Posted: 22 Aug 2012 06:14 PM PDT Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 Story by Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz Script by Tom Waltz Art by Andy Kuhn Colors by Ronda Pattison Letters by Shawn Lee Covers by Andy Kuhn, Kevin Eastman, and Valerio Schiti IDW Publishing Release Date: August 22, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 For those who have been following this latest incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the series is likely a revelation. When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license was sold to Nickelodeon, there was a lot of consternation and wringing of hands among comics fans that the new series would be another cash-in aimed at children. Of course there's still pleasure in seeing the characters you have grown with once again, but writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz have created something much closer to the original version, with enough tweaks that the series feels fresh and exciting enough to surprise you. A lot of this work shows up in the turtles themselves. Their quirks- Donatello as the science geek, Leonardo the rigid leader, Raphael the hothead, Michelangelo the carefree bro- aren't played up as such, but actually inform how each sees the world. They bicker and argue, not just for the sake of it, but because they disagree over how to handle a situation. Never before have they felt so distinct from each other and so fully realized as characters. When, for example, the turtles are presented with their own uniquely-colored masks, there's a satisfying justification for it that helps build the themes of the story, and the differentiation feels earned. Elements like these are what makes the series fresh and familiar, and is the difference between reinterpretation and cash-in. Alright, sorry for gushing, now let's get on to issue 13. [...] |
‘Videodrome’ Remake To Be Helmed By Commercial Director Adam Berg Posted: 22 Aug 2012 06:00 PM PDT Many classic films have been the subject of a reboot or a remake, and often times the reaction to the news of one is less than positive. Take the remake of David Cronenberg's Videodrome for example. Not only is it an unnecessary remake, but it's being scripted by Ehren Kruger, the screenplay writer for the last two Transformers movies. Just by knowing who is attached to write the script for the remake alone tells you that it will almost certainly be not anywhere near the same level as the Cronenberg original. Adam Berg joins a long line of commercial directors making the leap into feature films by making his directorial debut with the Videodrome remake. [...] |
‘Lawless’ Red Band Trailer: Sexy Ladies, Spilling Blood & Illegal Booze Posted: 22 Aug 2012 05:00 PM PDT If you weren't involved in bootlegging during the Prohibition era, then you weren't making any real money. Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf will play the Bondurant brothers in the upcoming crime drama Lawless, where they'll take it upon themselves to seize the opportunities and dangers that bootlegging has to offer. Now just a little over a week before the film's release, a new red band trailer has arrived and it really glosses over the amount of violence and skin you will see in the movie. Check it out below, and as always, this is obviously NSFW. [...] |
Comic Review: Prophet, Vol. 1: Remission Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:30 PM PDT Prophet Vol. 1: Remission Story By Brandon Graham Art By Simon Roy, Farel Dalrymple, Giannis Milonogiannis, Brandon Graham Cover By Simon Roy Image Comics Release Date: August 22, 2012 Cover Price: $9.99 Science fiction films, television, books, and comics are in some way inspired by our desire to explore the unknown. At the core of every Sci-Fi story is the discovery of a place or people that are strange and wholly unknown to us. The metallic monster crushing cities or the alien devouring a ship's crew one by one kicks our imaginations into full gear. Every day we wake up, go to work, come home, and go to bed, then repeat the whole process again. We gravitate towards the bizarre and unknown because it is simply something different. Prophet is that something different we are all searching for at the end of the day. This is a comic that not only explores the unknown, but also embraces it with reckless intensity [...] |
John Travolta Rumored To Join ‘The Toxic Avenger’ Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:00 PM PDT The Toxic Avenger is one of those nasty, brutally violent, sex-filled films that you can't help but watch. Sure enough with any film that has a cult following as large as it has, there will be studio heads looking to reboot the film. Steve Pink has been attached to direct the film for some time now and although things looked like they haven't been progressing as quickly as some would have liked, this latest bit of casting rumors should give it the push it needs to head into production. Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:30 PM PDT Youngblood #73 Written by John McLaughlin Art by John Malin Colors by Ross Hughes Letters by Russ Wooton Editors Eric Stephenson Cover by Rob Liefeld & Ross Hughes Image Comics Release Date: August 22, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Youngblood #73 reminds you why you loved Image Comics in the 90s. I have to admit, when I was about 20 years old or so, I was REALLY into Image Comics, like everyone was, for a few years they were fun. Then, the company (and its creators) really went into a different direction. Now, it seems they've balanced out their brand with books like this, Supreme, Bloodstrike, and things that you normally wouldn't associate as "Image books" like Saga, Thief of Thieves, Revival, etc. But, it's very nice that you can pick up a book off the stands and immediately say THIS is an Image Comic!" ‘Dawn Of The Dead’ Star Lindy Booth Joins The Cast Of ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:00 PM PDT Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall will be the next big superhero movie to feature a large gathering of heroes stopping crime. John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, Morris Chestnut and Robert Emms will be joining Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz to thwart crime and evil and stop the Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) dead in his tracks. News that Jim Carrey was being courted to join the cast as The Colonel, the leader of Justice Forever, was pretty big. So its time to take it down a few notches. [...] |
Comics Review: Danger Girl G.I. Joe #2 Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:30 PM PDT Danger Girl G.I. Joe #2 Written by Andy Hartnell Pencils by John Royle Inks by Philip Moy Colors by Romulo Fajardo, Jr. Letters by Neil Uyetake Edited by John Barber & Scott Dunbier Covers by John Royle & J. Scott Campbell IDW Publishing Release Date: August 22, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 After reading Danger Girl G.I. Joe #2, I'd advise you to breathe into a paper bag, put your head between your knees, whatever it is you need to do to catch your breath. This issue, as was the first, is quite a roller coaster ride! Andy Hartnell has proven himself time and again that he can write Danger Girl. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that he's the BEST writer of Danger Girl that there ever has been and ever will be. You can imagine my surprise, then, at how well written this issue is, because the Danger Girl team is BARELY IN IT!!! That's right, it's 90% G.I. Joe and 200% awesome. The thing that I love about Hartnell's work here is that he chooses the continuity that EVERYONE knows when it comes to G.I. Joe - the cartoon continuity. And from there he drops Abbey Chase and friends smack dab into the action. VERY well played [...] |
Ellen DeGeneres Signs On For Pixar’s ‘Finding Nemo 2′ Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:00 PM PDT Last month we reported that Andrew Stanton had been given the go ahead to put a sequel for Finding Nemo into motion. When that was announced, some wondered what the plot of the story might be. While we are still a long ways away from finding that out, we now have word that Ellen DeGeneres will be reprising her role as the forgetful but ever so friendly fish, Dory, in Finding Nemo 2. As earlier reported, the Pixar big wigs fell in love with the concept of the story for a Finding Nemo sequel. So this could be a fitting sequel to one of Pixar's most popular titles. [...] |

Titles like Braveheart and The Last Samurai jump to mind. But they're also movies that don't get old, and so long as there's a new story to tell, people will be there to hear it. Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale is one such story, one that's not all that well known. The most expensive Taiwanese film ever made, it follows the native tribes of the island of Taiwan who are considered savages by outsiders because of their headhunting traditions, including the Japanese, who come in hoping to mine the land of its many resources after the island is ceded to them in 1895 via a treaty with China.
