Dragon*Con 2012: Cosplay Photo Round-Up: Day 1, Part 2 Posted: 01 Sep 2012 07:26 PM PDT The cosplay at Dragon*Con 2012 is legit! It seems as though every year more con-goers are cosplaying and making higher quality costumes. This year, the costumes are everywhere, which makes for an awesome Dragon*Con experience where people-watching at the Marriot bar is like chilling at a dive bar on Tatooine. I attend a fair number of conventions in Florida; however, I only cosplay during my annual pilgrimage to Atlanta's Dragon*Con. Here, you're the weird one if you're one of the few not decked out as your favorite pop culture character. Dragon*Con simply creates an environment where even the most normal among us want to spend an absurd amount of time and money stitching together a costume of sheer awesomeness. I speak from experience. I used to be a salty old coot about cosplaying at convention and swore that I'd never do it. This weekend, my wife and I packed three costumes a piece and brought along a group of friends to cosplay with us. We're hooked. The effort and craftsmanship exhibited in the armor and fabric costume this year is, in a word, amazing. My only disappointment is that more con-goers aren't cosplaying Hunger Games, but I'm guessing that everyone else was also afraid that Hunger Games would be everywhere. Nobody wants to be one of a thousand Katniss's. Below is a small sample of the awesomeness. My favorite overall cosplayer in the gallery below was Kenny Powers. The guy totally had the part nailed and was hysterical. Well played, Mr. Powers [...] |
Dragon*Con 2012: Cosplay Photo Round-Up: Day 1 Posted: 01 Sep 2012 03:20 PM PDT Friday was the first day of Dragon*Con and it's when everyone shows up bright eyed and excited, ready for four days of fandom at its best. There are some smaller track (specialized programming dedicated to one particular fandom or aspect of fandom) specific costume contests but most people in costume are just there to Cosplay and get pictures taken. A vast majority of costumes bring multiple costumes with some even making a few changes throughout each day. But since Sunday is the day of the big main track costume contest, it's easy to consider Friday as a teaser with the best stuff yet to come. Here's our costume round up for the first day of the Con [...] |
First U.S. Trailer For Walter Salles’ ‘On The Road’ Posted: 01 Sep 2012 01:30 PM PDT Although Walter Salles' On The Road has been making a few festival rounds, we've only seen a couple of trailers from the film. Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart are just some of the headline names that have lead roles in the film, and now we are getting to see them in the first domestic and very brief beatnik trailer for the film. Check it out here below. You may have noticed that the trailer does an excellent job of previewing Jack Kerouac's travels during the Beat generation. The brief trailer can only be described as sexually raw, full of drug use, and is musically expressive [...] |
Countdown To Doctor Who: Book Review: ‘Shada’ Posted: 01 Sep 2012 12:33 PM PDT Doctor Who: Shada By Gareth Roberts Original Script by Douglas Adams Ace Publishing Release Date: June 26, 2012 Cover Price: $12.99 (Kindle Edition) In a rather captivating, though curious manner, you might find it astonishing that Gareth Roberts' adaptation of the Doctor Who adventure by Douglas Adams called Shada caused music to play in my head. That sounds a little weird, of course. But when it comes to both Doctor Who and Douglas Adams, the strangeness should not only be expected by now, but mandatory par for the course. Allow me to explain. I have found, in my years of being an overly obsessive geek that the best adaptations of already established franchises inspire your mind to create the ambience of the universe you're investing in. In all types of writing, a good author will not only be able to explain the scene to you, but totally immerse you in it: you can see the brightness (or gloominess) of the sky, you can almost feel the floors or walls of the setting, and you can smell the odors described, such as the scent of rain on a hot day… or petrichor, for example [...] |
‘God Of War’ Writers Promise Some Very Big Things Posted: 01 Sep 2012 11:39 AM PDT Not to be out done by the news that Columbia and Avi Arid will be releasing a film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, comes the latest development from newly hired God of War writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. For those who don't know, the game follows Kratos, a fallen Spartan general who seeks to carry out his revenge against the very gods who condemned him. Melton and Dunstan's writing credits, which include Feast and Saw IV - VII, might not bode well for the God of War film, but they did pen the rewrites for Pacific Rim [...] |
‘Brave’ Also Gets A Limited One Week Theatrical Re-release Posted: 01 Sep 2012 10:10 AM PDT Yesterday, Disney and Marvel Studios announced that it would re-release Joss Whedon's The Avengers for a limited one week theatrical run in 1,700 theaters across the country. Now Disney will be re-releasing another summer blockbuster. According to The LA Times, Disney and Pixar will be re-releasing Brave for a limited theatrical run in the same number of theaters as The Avengers re-release. This is to capitalize on a relatively slow Labor Day weekend. Yes, there are movies like Lawless and The Possession opening in theaters, but Disney is hoping that it could boost some box office numbers with these re-releases, which makes a lot of sense [...] |
Chris Pine Sets A Bad Example In This Motorcyle Pic For ‘Jack Ryan’ Posted: 01 Sep 2012 09:15 AM PDT Chris Pine seems to have a bad habit of riding a motorcycle without his helmet. But when you get play as Jack Ryan, I don't think it really matters. Paramount Pictures has just released the first photo of Pine playing as the titular character in the upcoming film titled Jack Ryan. Check out the full image of Pine below. Now there is not a lot to take away from this photo alone. The photo is what it is, which is Pine cruising down the streets of New York City on a Ducati (which is a very cool and very fast motorcycle by the way) without his helmet. We don't know where Jack Ryan is heading, but he seems to be determined to make it to his destination on time, even risking breaking the law to do so [...] |
