Dragon*Con 2012: 3 Favorite Moments From The Con

Dragon*Con 2012 banner

Day 4 of Dragon*Con, Monday, offers up a mixed bag of emotions. Most attendees are exhausted and maybe missing their beds at home. At the same time, there are nearly 55,000 geeks, all like-minded, all connected by fandom, in one place enjoying things they love. So looking at faces around the convention toward the end of the day on Monday reveals a little post-con depression. There are a few cosplayers left on Monday mixed with attendees hitting repeats of panels they may have missed earlier in the show and others trying to negotiate last minute deals in the dealer room, the art show, and the two exhibitor halls.

This seems like a great time to look back on the experience and recount my three favorite moments of Dragon*Con 2012 [...]

Comic Review: The Wonderland Alphabet

The Wonderland Alphabet

The Wonderland Alphabet
Verse by Alethea Kontis
Illustrations by Janet K. Lee
Characters inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll
Archaia Entertainment
Release Date: June 20, 2012
Cover Price: $11.95

Lewis Carrol has long captured my imagination with his imaginative tales of Alice and her journeys into the rabbit hole. Being a dad, I have looked forward to the day when I can share these books with my daughter. Thanks to Archaia Entertainment I don't have to wait as long as I suspected.

The Wonderland Alphabet is a simple, but beautiful retelling of the story of Alice. New York Times bestselling author Alethea Kontis has compressed the stories of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass into a format that is fun for the entire family without losing the imagination or enjoyment of the original stories. Starting with the letter "A" and working through the alphabet, each page retells the story of Alice using beautiful poetic language that perfectly captures the magic of the works this book is based on. Naturally Alice graces the first page at the letter "A," but other favorite characters aren't far behind with the Cheshire Cat at "C" and my personal favorite, the Jabberwocky at "J." [...]

Dragon*Con 2012: Sunday Cosplay Photo Round-Up

Dragon*Con 2012: Cosplay banner

Dragon*Con is always held on Labor Day weekend, which means that Sundays are basically a whole extra Saturday. In many ways, Dragon*Con Sundays are better than Saturdays. Whereas many conventions are wrapping things up on Sunday, Dragon*Con is still packed with major events, interesting panels, dusty vendor booths, awesome parties, and hot cosplay. On Sundays, the crowd is still crazy thick, but it's nothing compared to the cacophonic chaos of Saturday's mass confusion. By this point, most con-goers are aware of Dragon*Con's nuances and have mastered most of the tricks. Or we're all just experiencing a collective hangover from throwing back insane quantities of liquor the night before.

On Sunday night we hit the bars at the Hyatt and Marriott and a couple of parties at the Sheraton. The cosplay was out in force. Game of Thrones, True Blood, Iron Man, and Star Wars had a heavy presence at this year's Dragon*Con. Even Hunger Games made a late comeback in cosplay representation — I was surprised at the lack of Hunger Games costumes on Friday and Saturday. Some of the more unique costumes included a group of lizard aliens from V, Mary Poppins, Consuela, and Jurassic Park fossils.

Comic Review: Blacksad: A Silent Hell

Blacksad: A Silent Hell

Blacksad: A Silent Hell
Written by Diaz Canales
Art by Juanjo Guarnido
English-language Edition Edited by Diana Schutz
Dark Horse Comics
U.S. Release Date: July 11, 2012
Cover Price: $19.99

Noir stories have been making yet another surge in American culture, and especially the comics world over the past few years, with Warren Ellis' Fell, Richard Stark's adaptation of the Parker novels, Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt's The Damned, and seemingly everything Ed Brubaker touches ever being just a few shining examples. Adding to this stack of worthy reads, Dark Horse has mined the European market for a more traditional hard-boiled detective in writer Diaz Canales and artist Juanjo Guarnido's anthropomorphic creation, John Blacksad. Although the creative team is from Spain, they set Blacksad in the U.S. during 1950s and modeled him heavily on the archetype created by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

The first three volumes of Blacksad have already been collected in something of an omnibus of their work, and now the fourth one, Blacksad: Silent Hell, has been released for the American market. As a bonus, this edition includes two Blacksad micro-shorts and nearly 40 pages of preliminary sketches with commentary by the artist [...]

‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Trailer: Watch Jeremy Renner Dodge Fairy Tale Bullets

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 12:13 PM PDT

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Header

Originally Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters was supposed to hit theaters last March, but in some last minute decision making, Paramount and MGM decided that the film deserved to be released January 2013. Now we are getting our first look at the film, which features an older Hansel and Gretel (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton respectively) protecting various villages by killing off threatening witches.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is just another movie that takes a childhood fairy tale and puts a slight twist on it. We've already seen a couple of these films produce mediocre results, so why should Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters be any different. Well the film is set a couple of years after the events of when the children were nearly eaten by a witch and the sibling witch hunters have an assortment of weapons which includes Gatling guns [...]

Guarding the Globe, Volume 1 is an interesting comic. I didn't have anything invested in the characters or the book itself, but I was pleasantly surprised. But, not as much as I'd wanted to be.

Writers Robert Kirkman and Benito Cereno sure know how to write a giant, sprawling superhero team vs super villain team epic, earth shattering story. I just wish I cared a little bit more. And I wish it wasn't so cluttered. My first problem was that I barely knew any of the characters in the book, which, I'll admit, was my fault. I'm not a huge fan of the Image Comics' superhero universe, so almost all of these characters were foreign to me. That being said, I wish they would've spent a little more time introducing the characters...because there are a TON of characters in this book. It boils down to a double-page spread with each character getting a "This is...Kaboomerang!" [...]

Dragon*Con 2012: Cosplay contest banner 02

Sunday at Dragon*Con is full of panels and workshops, but this day is truly all about the official costume contest. Cosplayers bring out their best but only just under 40 were chosen for the event along with 13 in the children's bracket.

As usual, the show did not disappoint! Check out our gallery of images here below and pick your favorite! [...]

Comic Review: The Bionic Woman #3

The Bionic Woman #3

The Bionic Woman #3
Written by Paul Tobin
Art by Leno Carvalho
Colors by Mark Roberts
Letters by Simon Bowland
Cover by Paul Renaud
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: August 29, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Comics don't come more action packed then The Bionic Woman #3. From start to finish, you don't really get a chance to catch your breath. I'll be honest, I'm a mark for Steve Austin and Jaime Sommers, but I can't get over how GREAT this comic is. It's very far removed from your average licensed spin-off.

Writer Paul Tobin makes you forget that this is a licensed comic. He turns in the latest chapter in a fantastic story that takes Jaime all over the globe, in search of a team of people who are stealing body parts to sell to the highest bidder. And now, they want to go after Jaime and her bionic limbs. The action is fast and furious and Tobin does some GREAT characterization this issue. Even though Jaime's lost most, if not all, of her memory, Tobin really gives us a sense of just who she is and what she wants and what she's fighting for [...]

The Wachowskis Open Up About Filming ‘Cloud Atlas’

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 08:01 AM PDT

Cloud Atlas Header

To avoid any confusion as to what the basic idea of what The Wachowski Siblings (Lana and Andy) and Tom Tykwer's adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas might be, they released an extraordinarily long trailer – almost two and a half minutes longer than the average trailer. Still, a movie that has actors playing multiple characters in six multigenerational intersecting storylines may be a little difficult for the average audience member to grasp.

Now in a profiling interview with The New Yorker, the Wachowski Siblings are detailing the entire (the good and the bad) filmmaking process [...]

Dragon*Con 2012: Saturday Cosplay Photo Wrap-Up

Dragon*Con 2012: Saturday cosplay wrap-up banner

Saturdays at Dragon*Con always start with a huge cosplay parade through downtown Atlanta. It also is, by far, the busiest day of the convention. This year's Dragon*Con had the most jam-packed Saturday I've ever experienced. The ticket line wrapped around the hotel well past mid-afternoon. The Marriott hotel closed its entrance and only allowed entry through the connecting skybridges. The dealer halls were crammed with vendors desperately hawking their wares to con-goers. Dragon*Con is infamous for its nightlife with crazy, cosplay-filled parties such as my annual favorite, The Last Party on Alderaan, where us geeks let loose, drink ourselves stupid, and dance way past our bedtimes.

I braved the masses and snapped some cosplay pics while gathering loot and taking in the whole Dragon*Con experience. My personal favorites among this set are Marty McFly from the parade with his awesome VHS camcorder, the day-glow Green Lanterns Corps, and the group from Hocus Pocus. Okay, maybe I'm biased on that last one. My wife, cousin, and sister-in-law cosplayed the Sanderson Sisters and I made my debut as Billy Butcherson. We had an absolute blast playacting our roles all night. Nothing covers your shitty dancing like zombie stumbling on the dance floor [...]
