Spoiler Talk: 11-11-11

Movie poster 11-11-11

Pseudo-religious twaddle and apocalyptic bombast are both the baloney and the cheese in the latest mediocrity sandwich from director Darren Lynn Bousman, 11-11-11. The ads trumpet Bousman as the director of Saw 2, 3, and 4, though we're not sure why anyone would admit directing Saw 4. You can be sure that 11-11-11 will disappear from theaters faster than it takes to change the date to 11-12, and since Bousman also wrote this yawner disguised as a horror film, he has only himself to blame.

Then again, what else can you expect from a movie based on a date?

Throughout the movie's (thankfully) scant 80-minute running time, I was reminded of that horribly laughable Nic Cage Wicker Man remake and that just plain horrible Winona Ryder snoozer Lost Souls. 11-11-11 is neither better nor worse than those two, just equally bad [...]

‘Absolute Final Crisis’ Coming In February

Final Crisis

DC Comics announced on Tuesday that Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones' 2008 crossover event will be getting the giant, oversized treatment with Absolute Final Crisis.

Final Crisis was the story about how evil defeated good in the DC Universe. And while plenty of readers didn't quite enjoy the book, I did. In fact, it's one of my favorites events. But how I or you feel about the content of the story is simply irrelevant when it boils down to the Absolute format. You see, because Absolute Editions are not necessarily a way to enjoy the narrative of whatever story they collect. No, these oversized editions, to me, are primarily for the art. Of the Absolute Editions I do have, I can never actually read the story, because the art is too pretty and I just get distracted. And Final Crisis is a perfect addition the these collections [...]

3D Blu-Ray Review: Toy Story 2

Toy Story 2

Toy Story 2
Blu-Ray 3D Combo
Directed by John Lasseter, Ash Brannon, and Lee Unkrich
Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Don Rickles
Walt Disney Home Entertainment
Release Date: November 1, 2011

I am a sucker for animation. From Saturday morning cartoons to epic feature films, I have always been drawn to the medium. Disney movies were staples in my household, and we owned a ton of them. In fact, my current DVD/Blu-Ray collection probably has its roots in how I felt when bringing home a new Disney movie on video. Not only did the package contain the film that I loved, but the glossy, white-rimmed boxes were different from all the other VHS cassettes we had. They were a sight to behold, and though the format has changed over the years, Disney has never disappointed in their home video releases. Always at the forefront of trends, Disney/Pixar's release of Toy Story 2's 3D Combo Pack is a beautiful one [...]

‘Borat’ Star Sacha Baron Cohen Lands Small Role In Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 12:00 PM PST

Sacha Baron Cohen

One of the many things that director Quentin Tarantino is known for is putting together great casts for his movies; even for some of the smaller characters he has, such as Mike Myers in Inglourious Basterds for example. It sounded strange when first reported, but worked out great in the final product.

Perhaps not quite as strange as that particular casting, it's being reported that Tarantino has chosen Sacha Baron Cohen for a small role in his upcoming movie, Django Unchained. [...]

Deluxe Edition of Classic KISS Album ‘Destroyer’ Coming With Original Cover

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 11:00 AM PST

KISS

It is a move mirroring the historical sequence of events in the 1970's: Hot off the heels on his work with Alice Cooper's Welcome 2 My Nightmare, long time rock producer Bob Ezrin is reportedly back in the studio remixing the classic KISS album Destroyer, which celebrated its 35th anniversary this year.

Gene Simmons announced that the album will be re-released as a Deluxe Edition during 2012 complete with unreleased tracks, and the original artwork designed by Ken Kelly. Destroyer, along with the band's breakthrough live album KISS Alive!, is frequently pointed to as a significant album for the band -- it was a solid stepping stone to the heights of success they would claim in the late Seventies, and serve as a major influence for many bands ranging from the lightest of popular rock through to the darkest of black metal [...]

Wow. I don't know about you but when I read comics, I like to have fun. Jack Avarice is The Courier delivers that at a level I haven't seen in YEARS. This comic should have been published a long time ago, because it's something that's been lacking in the comic market for a long time. At its heart, it's a fun spy-action book and so much more. Let's get the obvious comparisons out of the way. This book is NOT Danger Girl without hot women, it's NOT Chuck, it's really unlike anything that I've come across before. But, what it is, is pure 100% AWESOME [...]

It’s Official: Original Black Sabbath Line-Up Reunited For New Tour, Album

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 09:30 AM PST

Black Sabbath

It has been rumored for some time, but yesterday it has been made official: the original Black Sabbath line-up is back together for a new tour (their first together since 1997) and their first full studio album since 1978's Never Say Die. The press conference announcement -- embedded at the bottom of this post -- was hosted by Henry Rollins, a long-time Sabbath fan.

The next Black Sabbath release is to be produced by Rick Rubin, famous for his work with Slayer, for his work with Johnny Cash during the Man In Black's final years, and bringing Metallica back to form with their Death Magnetic album [...]

‘Modern Warfare 3′ Shoots ‘Battlefield 3′ Feud Dead With Record-Setting $400 Million First Day

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 08:01 AM PST

Modern Warfare 3

Despite much drama and what looked like a significant potential fanbase loss, Activision has done it again, breaking the day-one video game release record for the third consecutive year with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

In its first 24 hours the game sold 6.5 million copies (including its record-breaking pre-orders), which equals out to $400 million. That breaks last year's record of $360 million set by Call of Duty: Black Ops, and the prior year's record of $310 million set by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. [...]
