Netflix Review: Insidious

Insidious

Directed by James Wan
Written by Leigh Whannell

FilmDistrict
Originally Released: April 1, 2011

The creative team behind Insidious, Leigh Whannell and James Wan (from my home country Australia), has done it again in the horror genre with a new take on some traditional ghost stories and horror plot devices. With a solid plot, some convincing performances from a great cast, and fantastic lighting and camera work, Insidious stands up as not only a decent firm horror movie, but as a nightmare personified [...]

Must See: Holiday Themed ‘Game Of Thrones’ Picture ‘Christmas Is Coming’

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 02:55 PM PST

Game of Thrones

Fans of author George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series and the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones, are well-familiar with the motto of House Stark: Winter Is Coming.

And though winter is indeed coming soon to most of us (if it has not already arrived where you are), it's also the holiday season, and so why not jolly things up a bit?

Someone took the great promo shot of Ned Stark (Sean Bean) sitting upon the Iron Throne (seen above) and added a little Christmas festivity to it. [...]

Comic Review: The Devil’s Concubine

The Devil's Concubine
Written by Palle Schmidt

Cover by Peter Snejbjerg
IDW Publishing
Release Date: May 11, 2011
Cover Price: $17.99

When a Danish cartoonist sets out to create a comic based off of some of the greatest American noir and crime novels, you know it's going to be a gritty affair. Palle Schmidt's U.S release of The Devil's Concubine is exactly that - a blood-soaked, bullet-riddled pulp crime graphic novel. In The Devil's Concubine the hits are messy, the actions constant, and the body count soars. Palle Schmidt has created a pulp crime graphic novel the likes of 100 Bullets and Jinx that paints humanity at its worst, no ones safe, and everyone is your enemy. Welcome to the world of The Devil's Concubine [...]

Comic Review: The Strain #1

The Strain #1

The Strain #1
Story by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan
Script by David Lapham
Art by Mike Huddleston
Colors by Dan Jackson
Letters by Clem Robins
Covers by Mike Huddleston, Steve Morris
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: December 14, 2011
Cover Price: $1.00

Amazing story, wicked plot, gorgeous art. There, that is my review of The Strain #1... no, seriously. It is that good. Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan wrote an excellent book and David Lapham did a very worthy adaptation for comic form. Add to that mix some great art from Mike Huddleston and you have the making of a stellar comic. No matter what your bag, this has something for you. This is a vampire tale that defies what you may have read in other comics or books. This takes a very modern view of the supernatural [...]

‘Avengers vs. X-Men #0′ Cover Revealed

Avengers vs X-Men #0 Cover Banner

In March, Marvel Comics will be releasing Avengers vs. X-Men #0 from the creative team of Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, and Frank Cho. This prelude issue is meant to set up the coming war of heroes and for better or for worse appears to be focused on Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch and Hope Summers. The Scarlet Witch is one of those great classic Marvel characters that has been totally destroyed in the last ten years and ends up being a writing crutch for Marvel creators. It would be cool if this storyline is what rescues the character and makes her cool again. I wouldn't count on it though.

At any rate, here's the cover for issue #0 of what will hopefully be an entertaining 12-issue war of heroes [...]

Francesco Francavilla’s Black Beetle Coming To Dark Horse

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

Black Beetle

Dark Horse Comics announced yesterday that Francesco Francavilla's pulp-inspired The Black Beetle will be making its way into the pages of Dark Horse Presents.

Dark Horse Presents has been a great way for creators to showcase their creator-owned work, so it makes perfect sense that Dark Horse approached Francavilla to bring his pulp-noir hero of Colt City to the anthology comic series [...]

Sacha Gervasi To Helm ‘Headhunters’
