Comic Review: Grim Leaper #1

Grim Leaper #1

Grim Leaper #1
Written by Kurtis J. Wiebe
Art by Aluisio Santos
Image Comics
Release Date: May 30, 2012
Cover Price: $3.50

The work of Kurtis Wiebe should, by all traditional standards, work against itself. On one hand, Wiebe writes the supernatural with a vivid sense of all the horror and terrors that often come with it. On the other hand, Wiebe has a comedic timing to his writing that is a joy to read all of its own. Those two elements combined, the horrible and the absurd, have typically kept a wide berth from one another for the past few decades in comics. Combining things so brutal and inhuman with the things that force us to crack a smile is not only an uphill battle, it's a vertical plummet. Wiebe has proven to readers with his work on Peter Panzerfaust, that he is capable of handling this tall double order. Grim Leaper #1 is another fantastic example of Wiebe's ability to both delight and terrorize his readers [...]

If you'd like a physical copy of Black Gives Way To Blue, the CD version is available for $10.

Released in 2009, Black Gives Way to Blue is Alice in Chain's first studio album since their eponymous third album was released back in 1995. ‘Iron Man 3′ Plot Reveals Villainous Hierarchy; Set Photos Show New Suit

Iron Man Header

It's not like we didn't see this coming, but its still nice to get a confirmation at least. When it was announced that Ben Kingsley was cast as a villain in the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3, many had speculated that he would be playing the villainous Mandarin. Of course Disney and Marvel denied these rumors and said that the villain would be behind a nefarious plot of releasing a nanobot technology-based virus.

Latino Review has confirmed that Kingsley will actually be the Mandarin, and that there is a power structure that will make the Iron Man 3 story the most complex in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Again Disney and Marvel continue to deny these rumors, but as cameras start to roll today, the site said that can confirm that the Mandarin is indeed in the movie [...]

Could Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale Return For Another Batman After ‘The Dark Knight Rises’?

Posted: 30 May 2012 02:39 PM PDT

Christopher Nolan

For quite some time now it's been stated pretty matter-of-factly that trilogy-maker The Dark Knight Rises would be the final Batman movie made by director Christopher Nolan and likely the rest of his cast and crew, including star Christian Bale.

This was so sure that it had already been announced that Warner Brothers planned to reboot the franchise after Nolan and company's departure...and it remains all but guaranteed (the departure; not the reboot) to this very day. [...]

Anne Hathaway Shines In The First Trailer For ‘Les Miserables’

Posted: 30 May 2012 01:24 PM PDT

Les Miserables Header

Anne Hathaway has shown that she has the skills to carry a tune at the Academy Awards, but that was just for a mere skit. Now she is taking that skill to Tom Hooper's adaptation of the critically acclaimed musical Les Misérables. Based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same name, Universal has released the first trailer for the film, but instead of focusing on the various characters of the musical, the trailer's focus of attention is on Hathaway as Fantine singing "I Dreamed a Dream." You can check out the trailer below.

Hugh Jackman plays Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe takes the role of Inspector Javert. The film also stars Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen [...]

Comic Review: Bomb Queen #4

Bomb Queen 4

Bomb Queen #4
Story & Art by Jimmie Robinson
Colors by Paul Little & Mike Meier
Cover by Jimmie Robinson
Image Comics
Release Date: May 30, 2012
Cover Price: $3.50

Bomb Queen #4 is the first issue of this title that I've read. It's nice to go into something with no preconceived notions or expectations. And, I have to say, I was pretty pleasantly surprised by this comic.

Writer Jimmie Robinson crafts a really...different kind of comic here. It's the perfect blend of sci-fi and super heroes, one mash-up that I'm normally not too big a fan off, but I have to say, Robinson pulls it off IN SPADES. He's created a great version of the future that's not really post-apocalyptic, but it's not all hoverboards and flying cars, either. The weird thing is, and this might be a TINY spoiler - Bomb Queen is hardly in the book. However, there's a great deal of Shadowhawk and what Robinson did here is genius. While not interrupting his normal story, he's made me want to know more about Bomb Queen AND Shadowhawk! Now that's a job well done! You definitely get your money worth in this issue, as it's NOT a quick read at all. There's a lot going on in the issue, and make sure you pay attention to the backgrounds and captions! [...]

Paramount’s ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Delay Explained and It’s Not All About The 3D

Posted: 30 May 2012 11:24 AM PDT

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Just last week, Paramount abruptly decided to push G.I. Retaliation from its original June 29th release to March 29th 2013, to convert the film into 3D. Many, including ourselves, did not buy the act for one bit. Some news confirms that the film is not testing as well as the studio had hoped and also opening up against the likes of The Amazing Spider-Man, which opens five days after G.I. Retaliation, had forced Paramount to make its decision to push back the release date. But there is more to it than that, much more.

Part of the reason why the film isn't testing as well as the studio would have hoped is because the first film's major protagonist, Duke (played by Channing Tatum), is barely in this sequel. Test audiences loved the on-screen chemistry between Duke and Roadblock (played by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson). Tatum's recent success has made him a huge draw and a very likable person amongst audiences, so it was a surprise that he's not going to be a big part of this follow-up. This, along with the reactions from those same test audiences saying the entire movie was either bad or just mediocre, doesn't spell box office gold for Paramount [...]

Shortlist Of Actors Who Could Play Finnick Odair In ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

Posted: 30 May 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Taylor Kitsch

With every sequel comes new character roles that need to be filled, such as that with the upcoming sequel to the adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel Catching Fire, the second book in the successful Hunger Games trilogy. Among the top roles in the sequel, officially titled The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is that of Finnick Odair. I'll try to describe the character with the least amount of spoilers possible: He is a highly capable athlete brought in to take part in a newly designed game.

Since Gary Ross has decided not to come back to direct Catching Fire, Lionsgate has hired Francis Lawrence to direct the sequel, and now he is tasked with recruiting an actor to play the role of Finnick. According to E! Online, the top three names are Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch, and Garrett Hedlund [...]
