Writer Gore Vidal Dead At 86

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 10:35 PM PDT

Gore Vidal

Gore Vidal, the seminal wordsmith, jack of all things witty, provocative, and erudite in the many writings he authored, who always seemed to have his finger firmly entrenched on the pulse of the national culture politically and socially throughout much of the mid-20th century, died of complications from pneumonia on July 31, 2012, in Hollywood at his home, reports The New York Times. The news was confirmed by his nephew, the filmmaker Burr Steers, who said his uncle had been sick for some time. Vidal was 86 years old.

He spread himself eclectically in the arts, mainly in the literary circuits and was responsible for penning over 20 books in his lifetime. One of them, his third, entitled The City and the Pillar, published in 1948, was one of the first major tomes to explore themes of homosexuality (Vidal himself was bisexual), something that was all but taboo during that post-World War II, post-President Roosevelt America. Vidal's penchant for syntax and printed word ran at fever pitch; he penned essays on sundry hotbed topics as sexuality, religion, politics, and literature, the results of which equally divided the followers and haters of his works and eventually earned him National Book Award honors in the early 1990s for a voluminous anthology of those essays, which spanned 40 years in the book, and was entitled United States Essays, 1952-1992. Vidal is also well known for his historical assessments on the lives of Abraham Lincoln and Aaron Burr, as well as the satiric novel Myra Beckinridge, which was adapted into a cult campy arguably awful film in 1970 starring Raquel Welch as a transsexual and also starring the inimitable Mae West [...]

He-Man’s In Trouble and Only YOU HAVE THE POWER!!!

Masters of the Universe Classics

Ten years ago, every fan of the Masters of the Universe franchise got what they always wanted - a brand new, updated version of the classic series complete with a new cartoon on Cartoon Network, new, updated action figures, a brand new comic book series, and TONS of other merchandise. It was a dream come true for those of us who had waited almost 20 years for any kind of new Masters of the Universe product. Sadly, ever since He-Man returned in 2002, he's been fighting an uphill battle. First, his new cartoon was canceled. Then, his comic book was canceled. Then, the new line of figures ended. He-Fans had thought all hope was lost.

Fast forward to the 2008 San Deigo Comic-Con. There, in the Mattel display case was a brand new figure that was the PERFECT He-Man. Fans went wild, message boards were overloaded and shut down. It was announced later that weekend that a brand NEW line of figures were being produced, called Masters of the Univerese Classics. Basically, it was brand new figures based on the classic line, but updated with fantastic sculpts by the legendary Four Horsemen. Instead of selling the figures at retail, Mattel offered a subscription service where you could sign up and get a figure every month. We got some of the best figures ever produced. From mainstays like He-Man and Skeletor to awesome beasts like Battle Cat and Panthro, the line was a dream come true for He-Man fans, and to this day, it still is [...]

Geek Fit

Welcome to Geek Fit, Readers of Doom! No doubt you are curious as to the nature of the posts that are soon to grace the fine pages of Geeks of Doom under the banner of Geek Fit. First and foremost, I have always been a "geek." I grew up like many of you, playing video games, reading comic books, dreaming of having my own super powers, and what it would be like to shake hands with an Aes Sedai, or battle a beholder beside a loveable rogue and a brutish barbarian. [...]

$5 MP3 Album Deal: America’s Greatest Hits

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:30 PM PDT

America

The mellow soft rock singer/songwriter sounds of the early to mid 1970s arguably found its apex with the folk rock band America, who released hit after hit during that time. A great collection of all those songs, many which hit top ten or even number one on the charts, are complied on the album America's Greatest Hits , which is on sale right now in MP3 format for only $5.00 on Amazon.

This record might embody the entire "feelgood" vibes of that time, full of many songs that are guilty pleasures and some that are bona fide pop classics: "A Horse With No Name," the-rolling-down-the-highway "Ventura Highway," the ballad "I Need You," the saccharine strains of "Muskrat Love," the ex-Beatles producer George Martin-helmed bass-heavy "Tin Man," and the memorable smash "Sister Golden Hair" among others. A great collection for when it's time to chill, lay back in the hammock, and take a break from musical headbanging and just letting the noggin sway softly and subtly in the breeze.

Geek Discussion: Who Do YOU Want To See Direct & Star In The Next Batman Movie?

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Batman Banner Image

Now that The Dark Knight Rises has officially been released to the masses and director Christopher Nolan is officially moving on to other projects, it's about that time when we the fans start wondering who the new faces of the Batman franchise will be.

Warner Brothers has already said that they plan to reboot the franchise in the future, which is to be expected---it'd be silly business if they didn't---but the question is just when they will make their move. It could be a couple years, it could be a decade for all we know. But there will come a time when Batman returns (*giggle*) to movie screens. [...]

Fox May Let Marc Webb Direct ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Marc Webb

The success of The Amazing Spider-Man has paved the way for Sony to turn the film into a trilogy. This could not have happened if it wasn't for director Marc Webb. Of course Webb is expected to return to his post to direct its sequel, but since he owes Fox – the studio that helped finance and distribute (500) Days of Summer - one more film, that he may not be able to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Now comes word that Fox may be willing to let Webb make the Spidey sequel ... for a price. [...]

Script For Broken Lizard’s ‘Super Troopers 2′ Turned In; ‘Beerfest’ Sequel ‘Potfest’ Likely Too

Super Troopers Image

Those who follow the Broken Lizard comedy team have been awaiting word that Super Troopers 2, the sequel to their classic 2001 indie comedy, is officially happening for a long, long time. And will continue to wait.

Last we heard a script for the movie had been completed, but some legal complications had to be sorted out first. Now comes word that said script has been turned in to Fox Searchlight, but said legal complication still needs to be worked out. If it is---and they do seem to think it will eventually be resolved---then the movie is a go. [...]

$5 MP3 Album Deal: Thelonious Monk Genius Of Modern Music: Vol 1

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 11:33 AM PDT

The aptly titled Genius Of Modern Music: Vol 1, which showcases the late, eccentric and innovate jazz pianist/composer Thelonious Monk, is on sale for $5.00 in MP3 format on right now at Amazon.

Showcasing his earliest recordings from 1947, Monk had a bright, breezy, yet assured style that he only got stronger with as his career pushed forward in the decades following these recordings, finding its zenith by the 1960s. Jazz aficionados will be impressed by the selection here on this Blue Note recording; what it lacks in sonic polish in terms of sound, it more than makes up for it in its sonic moxie. "Off Minor," the wonderfully sublime and beautiful "Ruby My Dear," the great "Well You Needn't," "Introspection," "Nice Work if You Can Get It," and the jazz standard "Round Midnight" are just a sampling of all the classic tracks included within, many of which later became Monk staples when he became sort of an "elder statesman" of jazz later in his musical life.

G.I. Joe #15 is basically the perfect G.I. Joe comic. It's got everything that you want - Joes, Cobras, and fighting. Another great issue by the current creative team. YO JOE!!

Writer Chuck Dixon sure knows how to handle a crowd!!! There are COUNTLESS characters in this issue and they all get a fair amount of "scren time," he moves the story along at a great pace, and winds up and starts several plot threads. And let me tell you, one of them that he starts is gonna have a REALLY interesting outcome. Frankly, I'm afraid of how it's going to turn out. Seriously, this issue is GREAT. In a way, it really reminds me of an old episode of the TV show, although clearly updated [...]
