Remembering Grunge Pioneers Kurt Cobain & Layne Staley

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley

There are two tragic rock and roll death anniversaries to remember today, April 5, both for key figures in the early 1990s Seattle grunge music scene: Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who died 18 years ago, and Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, who died 10 years ago.

Both bands (along with a few others) were instrumental in changing the face of a musical style and generation that was choked by heavy metal, second generation glam, tepid pop music, and unoriginality in many forms in the musical universe during the late 1980s. Nirvana came into that stifled world like a dirty, grungy tidal wave, washing over all the aforementioned genres in a river filled with glass and soot, which was exactly the approach they wanted to take [...]

The Lone Ranger #4 is another can't-miss issue. With so many stories going on at once, you never get lost or confused for a minute while reading this excellent comic. For the fourth month in a row, it's another home run for this book!

Writer Ande Parks crafts a fantastic story this issue with lots going on. There's about four different tales going on at once, including a fantastic origin of a main character!!! Be SURE to pick this one up, because I have a feeling it's going to be very important down the road. This issue really transcended my love of the PROPERTY of The Lone Ranger, and solidified my love for this as a COMIC BOOK. At this point, Parks has you invested in these characters, that you don't even think of them as TV, movie, or radio characters. You just read it because it's a great comic [...]

Farrelly Bros Confirm ‘Dumb & Dumber 2′; Production To Begin This Fall

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Dumb and Dumber

At a press junket for their latest movie The Three Stooges, directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly took some time to discuss the long-rumored sequel to their 1994 smash hit debut Dumb & Dumber, which also helped launch the career of star Jim Carrey. Coming Soon reports that Peter Farrelly said that the movie is definitely in the works with the stars returning and that the brothers are looking to begin production later this year on Dumb & Dumber 2 (title subject to change)."

We're getting set to shoot Dumb and Dumber 2 in September," Farrelly said. "It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."

Comic Review: Skullkickers #13

Skullkickers #13
Written by Jim Zubkavich
Art by Edwin Huang
Colors by Misty Coats
Image Comics
Release Date: April 4, 2012
Cover Price: $3.50

Skullkickers finally returns after a 4-month hiatus with a new story arc that promises to shed some light on the mysterious origins of our favorite mercenaries. Skullkickers #13 is the jumping on point for this new storyline and it dedicates itself to establishing a solid foundation for the rest of the saga. The trademark violence of Skullkickers is largely absent from this issue. Yet Skullkickers #13 gives readers something much more gratifying than blood and guts.

The most powerful moments in comics occur once we, as readers, realize that our heroes are vulnerable. The moment that Batman emerges from the rubble with Jason Todd's body is so iconic for this reason. For the first time, we are shown that maybe the men and women in our comics are not without fear and loss. For 12 issues Skullkickers has thrown the mercenary duo in front of nearly every kind of monster, ghoul, and goblin with nary a scratch. Issue 13 is one of the first times that writer Jim Zubkavich paints one of his characters as a less than invincible super man [...]

Platinum Dunes Negotiating To Take Over Producing The ‘Halloween’ Franchise

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Halloween

Between bouts of orchestrating giant alien robot punch-ups and fanning the rage flames of Internet trolls who will still see his movies no matter what crazy crap he pulls on them, Michael Bay is collecting moribund movie franchises like properties on the Monopoly game board. In recent weeks online news sites have been treating the in-demand blockbuster schlock master's plans for revitalizing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (which will now be called Ninja Turtles and the title characters will be alien in origin) like they were continuing developments in the Trayvon Martin case.

Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company are now looking the Halloween movie series to their stable of brand name cinematic properties [...]

Watch Fender’s ‘A Strat Is Born’ Film Showing How The Stratocaster Is Made

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Fender A Strat Is Born Stratocaster

Fender has posted a new short film called A Strat is Born, which takes you on a quick journey showing how their popular Stratocaster guitar is made.

You can watch the 4-minute video here below.

Unlike most "how its made" videos, this one has no narration, no puns, no interviews -- instead, it's quick clips along the assembly line at Fender's U.S. manufacturing facility in Corona, CA, all to a booming score by Wayne Kramer, guitarist of the MC5.

While the Stratocaster is made in a factory, this video shows that its not all heavy machinery doing the work, as there's a lot of hand craftsmanship going on here. Being a fan of the Strat myself, I loved getting an inside look into how this guitar is made, although, I must admit, I was a bit disappointed that Yngwie Malmsteen was not at the end of the assembly line scalloping the fretboards [...]

Comic Review: Danger Girl: Revolver #3

Danger Girl 3

Danger Girl: Revolver #3
Written by Andy Hartnell
Art by Chris Madden
Colors by Jeremy Cox
Letters by Neil Uyetake
Covers by J. Scott Campbell & Chris Madden
IDW Publishing
Release Date: April 4, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Danger Girl Revolver #3 is just what you've missed about Danger Girl comics. Hopefully now that they're back at IDW we can look forward to more minis or maybe even an ongoing. This franchise is too much fun to let lay for too long.

Series co-creator Andy Hartnell tells a classic Danger Girl story here, actually it's more than your typical Danger Girl story as he uses this issue (and series) to delve into the personal lives of the team, which we haven't seen before. Also, there's TONS of action, intrigue, and a nice ongoing mystery. This issue is a goldmine for fans of the franchise, because Hartnall crams this issue with tons of past Danger Girl character cameos, which is a real treat for long time fans. My only complaint would be that it's a quick read, but that's due to pacing, and not lack of story [...]

New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Video Game Trailer Released

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Game of Thrones RPG

Atlus PR and Focus Home Interactive have released a new trailer for the upcoming Game of Thrones video game being developed by Cyanide Studios.

The trailer, titled "This Is War," joins a group of trailers that have been released for the game, including the two we saw back in December. We've remained cautiously optimistic about the RPG, and though it doesn't look like it will be winning any Game of the Year awards, it does still look like it could be fun for fans of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series and the HBO series. [...]

The movie tells the story of an unmotivated high school gym teacher who has to cancel all of his summer plans when the vice principal decides to have him take on a class of outcasts and slackers as the new summer school teacher. [...]

Star Trek original series cast

Actress Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura in the original 1960s Star Trek television series, recently had the chance to visit the White House, where she had her photo taken with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office.

And what are the two of them doing in the photo? Flashing the Vulcan salute.

Awesome.

Check out the photo here below.

Nichols met with Obama on February 29, 2012, and posted the photo to her Twitter account today. "A photo came to me in the mail that I've kept for myself for over a week, but now it's time to share it with Trekkers everywhere," the 79-year-old actress tweeted. "Taken 2/29/12 in the Oval Office - Live Long & Prosper!" [...]

The GoD List: Comics For April 4, 2012

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 09:09 AM PDT

GoD List Banner

Each and every week "YES! YES! YES!" MK2Fac3 and "Love Him or Hate Him" Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn't? So, let's take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we'll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of April 4, 2012. Single issues and trades, they're all here.

Well, so a lot of things have happened over the past week. Most of them happened at WrestleMania. You see, Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, and all of the fans got screwed out of a really good, fun match when WWE booked the match to end in 18 seconds. I know most of you don't really care about wrestling (I actually don't know that), but you should check out Daniel Bryan's stuff on YouTube. Dude's phenomenal! Anyway, now that the customary wrestling talk is out of the way, let's address comics! Comics? Yes, comics, Hunter. There's a whole lot of freaking books coming out this week that are newsworthy. Firstly, let's address that this is the cancellation month for DC books, so if you're one of the 50 people reading OMAC, you won't be reading that anymore. Scott McDaniel and myself won't be reading Static Shock anymore, and I'm pretty sure no one was still reading Mr. Terrific or Blackhawks anyway, but those books are gone as well. Along with these books, Men of War is getting cancelled, too, and it's getting replaced with a war book in what I can only assume is a way to stop Viktor Kalvachev from making amazing covers for DC books. Nonetheless, this week's Men of War features a guest appearance by Frankenstein and it's written by Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt, so make sure that's on your radar. Am I giving too much away in the intro? Maybe, but there's still one more thing to hit on. What was it...? Hmm.... Oh yeah! Avengers vs. X-Men officially starts this week! So, if you want a complete rundown of this and all the other books you should be paying for and attention to, keep reading because that's what The GoD List is all about, mother lovers [...]
