Comic Review: To Hell You Ride #1

To Hell You Ride #1

To Hell You Ride #1
Written by Lance Henriksen and Joseph Maddrey
Art by Tom Mandrake
Colors by Cris Peter with Mat Lopes
Letters by Nate Piekos of Blambot
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: December 12, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

To Hell You Ride (the title is a play on words inspired by the comic's Telluride Colorado locale) combines the debut comic writing talent of actor Lance Henriksen (best known for his role as Bishop from Aliens and for acting in nearly every genre film in the last 40 years) and Joseph Maddrey (Nightmares in Red, White and Blue: The Evolution of the American Horror Film), with art by Tom Mandrake (The Spectre, oodles of Batman). Those names are certainly enough to sell comics on their own merits. However, it is their deft synthesis of Native American folk tales with horror and western genres that allows Dark Horse's new series to read less like standard comic fare, and more like a well-paced film that stays with you long after the credits stop rolling.

With a byline like "White Man's Guilt" and a plot that involves white settlers in the 1880s interrupting a tribal sacrifice ritual that unleashes a supernatural curse that affects the denizens of the Colorado mountain town up to the present day, one might assume this is a book about race. However, that's hardly a fraction of the point. Without any specific agenda, this comic is already asking more questions than providing answers and thus providing space for an epic journey to unfold. With statements like "The world falls further out of balance with each new generation. The only thing that changes are out intensity of our indifference." This could be a rather heavy handed comic without the advanced cinematic timing and character development skill of its authors. Existential questions about the environment and ignoring the messages of the land and the importance of ritual are expressed within the frame of a grand adventure, with lots of supernatural elements thrown in [...]

Criminal Macabre: Final Night

Criminal Macabre: Final Night #1
The 30 Days of Night Crossover
Written by Steve Niles
Art by Christopher Mitten
Cover by Justin Erickson
Dark Horse Comics
Release date: December 12, 2012
Cover price: $3.99

To say that Steve Niles has created the best of both worlds when it comes to horror and crime-pulp-noir with his two most well known properties, Criminal Macabre and 30 Days of Night, is an understatement. Any fan of horror, crime comics, or novels of the like would absolutely love these stories and the revolving cast of characters.

Criminal Macabre is about Cal McDonald, a former cop turned supernatural detective, who with the aid of his ghoul sidekick Mo'lock battle the forces of evil and get just as wasted doing so. 30 Days of Night is the story of vampires attacking a small Alaskan town named Barrow, where the sun goes down for a month and vampires are free to roam. Steve Niles has written several mini-series and novels based on the characters from both properties. 30 Days of Night was adapted as a major motion picture as well as the second story in the series, Dark Days, which was a direct-to-DVD movie. Needless to say, both titles have a lot of history behind them and this story has been building for a long time [...]

Release Date: October 30, 2012
Hardcover | Kindle

Okay, let me preface this review of I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus with the statement that I'm really not a fan of zombies. *Pauses for gasps and looks of shock* I am a huge fan of that popular zombie comic and the television series upon which it is based. Maybe a few of the movies over the years have entertained me, but for the most part...nope, couldn't care less. Let the Facebook unfriending begin!

Now, having said this, I went into this book with zero expectations and not a little apprehension. I am not normally known for finding entertainment in silly stories but luckily this one surprised me from start to finish. I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus was a fun novel from the get go. A real eye-opener to what I might have normally passed off as not worthy of my attention. I laughed so much while reading this novella that I woke my wife up twice that night with all the noise. On top of it all, there was a really great story to be found here, wrapped up in some well laid humor and morals [...]
